Monday morning inspirations...

Good morning ladies...

I'm super excited about this week on the blog!  I've got a giveaway going on, lots of outfit posts with some of my super fun new clothes from my Chicago trip and I am already stewing on my next Thursday Latelies post - last week's was such a hit!

Any way... I have been incredibly inspired by BRIGHT PINK lately... I bought quite a few pink things in Chicago (stay tuned for them to pop up on the blog... although there is a sneak peek on my latest video of my new pink blazer which I am totally in love with!), I just recovered my dining room chairs with bright pink fabric, I did some pink artwork for my bedroom a few months back and I even just bought day-glo pink nail polish!

In the meantime... here are some of my favorite pink 'pins'!

Now, isn't that such a nice start to the week!?!?

2011 Trend Predictions...

It's always fun to try and gaze into the future and theorize about upcoming trends and styles. Polyvore is hosting a contest to predict the trends of 2011... of course I made sure that mine are super-practical and trends that I would invest in and wear myself. (and psst... like what you see??? In my usual form, all items are UNDER $100!)

Here's my entries:
Modern Hippie Chic

What would you say are going to be the trends of 2011? How do you feel about these trends?

clogs = want.

I know the internet is just FULL of constant inspiration... but on a very, super, very rare occasion I see a picture and I practically shout at my screen - YES! YES!

This picture from Garance TOTALLY had me excited! I don't usually snag photos from other bloggers, but I have been thinking and scheming all weekend long and it's totally due to this picture. Garance is unendingly cool (those French!), with amazing style and a handsome and successful beau as well!

I am obsessed with her cut-off jeans... and already scheming about which pair in my closet will be the first to be sacrificed to fashion. And the clogs... the clogs!!!

While I could never pull of the pair she is wearing (or come close to affording them) - I have been scouring the internet to find a suitable replacement. I am completely obsessed with these Uggs. They are closest and most reasonable pair I can find that I like. But, really, I mean buying clogs (likely these Uggs, no less) in the middle of the spring/almost-summer is almost nuts, right!?!?!

Ugg Clog, Chestnut, $130

Ugg Clog, Black, $130

The good news is that I have a little "shoe" money set aside for a different pair I was eyeing recently. The bad news is that I can't choose which color.

Dreamers into Do-ers: Jess of Birdhouse Interiors!

I am SO excited to have my first "Dreamers into Do-ers" interview up today! It with the lovely Jess from Birdhouse Interiors. I don't know how I first came across her blog or company, but I love it's design philosophy and Jess always comes across as so down to earth that I knew she would have some great insight into how she built her interior design business and followed her dreams!

Q. When and how did you make the decision to go on your own with Birdhouse Interiors?

A. I wanted to do it for about six months before I actually did. I was working on design projects and still kept a "day job" for security. Then one day, I had enough of my job and not being in control of my life (plus working in a field I wanted nothing to do with anymore) so I gave my two weeks notice. I was then forced to get my act together and finish all the little details for Birdhouse that I had been putting off. My official launch was in August '09.

Q. What were some of your biggest challenges in that decision?

A. Biggest challenges: Fear! I was scared to death that I would suck (still am)! Not really, but scared that people would look at what I was doing and think there was no way I was up to par with all of the very trained and educated designers. Though I do have a strong design background and quite a bit of design education, I am not an official "designer". I am a decorator and I was afraid that just being a decorator would allow people to not take me seriously. I'm coming to terms with not being so hard on myself as I learn more and more everyday and develop my own personal aesthetic while still guiding my clients to find theirs.
Also, money! I asked my husband if I could quit my other job even though he would be the complete breadwinner and put a lot of pressure on him. He didn't even flinch and we decided to sell our house and downsize in order for me to follow my dreams. What a great guy, right?

Q. What are your biggest thrills in being your own boss?

A. I love being in complete control. I love working when I want to and setting my own hours. Nothing beats working on things in the morning and still being in your pajamas! But I also love that I can develop my business exactly how I want. I can grow and do whatever I see fit for Birdhouse and I can take on as much or as little as I choose.

Q. Sometimes being your own boss can be lonely... who is your support system and what do they mean to you and your growing business?

A. It can be very lonely, especially when you work from home. There are days that I don't leave the house and don't see a real person which can make me a little crazy. It is nice to get out to see clients and go to stores to interact with others. My husband is my number one supporter and seems willing to do whatever it takes to make me succeed. (Even though I think he is very jealous at 7 AM while I'm still snoozing and he is getting up to start his day!) I seriously could not do it without his support and encouragement. My parents have been huge supporters too - my dad with business advice and my mom listening to my ideas for hours on the phone. Plus, my dog, Lisey. I love her bouncing around and snuggling up next to me as I work.

Q. Do you ever pinch yourself with Birdhouse Interiors or did you always know you would be where you are?

A. I didn't know where I would be at all! I stumbled around not finding a real passion for anything until I really got into remodeling and interior design. Then, I knew I had to do this with my life. So yes, I sometimes look up and think "I can't believe I'm here". But, I still have so far to go, which makes it hard for me to take a step back and see where I am at sometimes.

Q. Do you have a mantra that keeps you going on the bad days?

A. Not really, I just feel sorry for myself. I'm kidding (sort of). I just tell myself that nothing worth having, you won't have to work for; and then get back to work trying to gain more exposure, learn more about everything, market myself, network, etc.

Q. Do you come from a long line of entrepreneurs or are you blazing a trail in your family?

A. I actually do come from a line of entrepreneurs. My dad owns his own business (that he started at 27, like me) and also does a lot of real estate development. My brother is part of that real estate development, but took it in his own direction and runs everything for himself. I have never been good at being told what to do and working for someone I didn't believe in. I am certainly a team player, but it sure is easier to be said player when you are the captain of the team.

Q. What new do you have in store for Birdhouse Interiors in the New Year?

A. I am hoping 2010 when be a pretty amazing year for Birdhouse. I am working really hard at opening a storefront to house reworked furniture pieces, original art from local artists, and miscellaneous other housewares. My plan is to have the store and my office for design services in the same place. I want to do consignment for furniture as well. For example, if you bring in a used piece (that is still in good shape and I can see potential in) I would buy it from you or give you store credit. Then I would rework the piece and bring it back to life and add it to my store. Plus, I really want to help more clients and add a great deal more to my portfolio.

~~~
Thank you so much Jessica! Sounds like Jess has a ton in store for 2010 - and maybe even a store-front, how fun! Don't forget to check out Jess' website and blog!
Next week we have another phenomenal interviewee with more great practical tips on wisdom on following your dreams! Stay tuned!
my outfit: happy feet!
Inspiration for personal style and fashion can often come in the most unlikely place... take this outfit for instance. I have a tear from a magazine hanging in my closet of a great ensemble that features navy and orange. Stylistically, this outfit here is nothing like it's "inspiration" but the navy and orange comes across well in many wardrobe forms. I challenge you to start putting outfits together based on color inspiration from magazine tears you have... fashion or interior color combos work equally well! Whatever suits your style...
So then why the reference to "happy feet"? Inspiration can also happen on accident... the morning I took these photos I had just been at the gym and forgot to bring my "normal" shoes along with my change of clothes. So I ended up wearing this outfit and my gym shoes home. With the navy and orange and a touch of gold in the necklace... the ensemble actually came together with a really fun and unexpected edge (well, unexpected for me... these babies don't see much "action" besides the gym floor!). Point being, go out of your box... you might surprise yourself!
nothing like a good cowboy...
This can be filed under Las Vegas trip notes... however, the photos and experiences weren't mine. :(
"PBR" was in Las Vegas while we were. Oh, wait, you don't know what PBR is? Common'! Well, the truth is I didn't until I learned about it last year when we were in Vegas at the same time of year. It's not "Pabst Blue Ribbon" which is what folks in my parts would guess (good down home midwest beer). It's actually the Professional Bull Riders. Cowboys, people. They were peppered all over Vegas while we were there.
And, of course, no one could capture the event as well as The Sartorialist and his gal, Garance, no?
(photo via Garance Dore)
Makes this city mouse want to buy a pair of Wranglers and let my hair blow in the dusty breeze. Because, really, there is nothing like a good cowboy, right?
(ps, wouldn't it have been wild to run into these two fab bloggers!?!?!)
(pps. probably the closest I will ever be to Tim and Garance and their cameras. In my life. I think I can live with that though.)
such a tease...
I'm working on putting together my daughter's "big girl" room... it's currently at a very awkward DURING stage. The during stage can be draining and frustrating and pretty much that is where I am at right now with it.
So lets focus on more happy thoughts... shall we?
Here's the before... I loved her before, but call me crazy, after having a crib in my house for 5 + years... I. AM. DONE.
Without further ado... the nursery (which seems silly saying for my now two year old!):
Her sweet little shoes all in a row. I just love little kids shoes... especially the small ones. I love showcasing her collection here (this is only a portion of course... the rest are strewn around the house, likely). A girl has gotta have shoes...
From this photo... the mirrored dresser and the large "A" I found at the antique store will remain in the room (although I am taking suggestions on new paint colors for the dresser... this green color looks a little blah against the walls - which will also stay the same).
Adorable as they are... the red crib and changer will GO. I love them dearly but they need a new home (if you know some one let me know... they have been on craigslist for a week with no takers, seems crazy to me, but I guess I am partial). Of course the rocker will go too.
Here's the inspiration for the new room:
The look I am going for is "sweet boho"... here's how I hope to accomplish it.
- The bedding is REALLY cute in person (although I hate to even admit I went to Walmart to seek it out) - and cheap! Polka dot sheets (what is sweeter than polka dots?) and a purple quilt.
- The artwork/wall hangings I am working on snagging from other rooms or doing some diy stuff - stay tuned for that! It will have similar metal, floral and nature elements as I chose here.
- The bed from IKEA is pretty much what I would buy for myself if I were a young girl. So yes, yes I am living vicariously.
- A smattering of throw pillows to boho it up a bit.
- The large letter "A" (second pic) was a great antique store find. It was love at first sight when I saw it... I starred at it for likely a whole minute before I realized, "duh, your daughter's name starts with an 'A'".
So with all these dets... seriously, any ideas on paint colors for the dresser? Bright turquoise? Bright pink? DO TELL!
obsessed with...
These snacks... luckily my local grocery has a generic version that is just as good (or better even!)
My new gold Nike sneaks... they make me seriously excited to work out.
And these Gap jeans... they are next up on my list of "to buy."
Emma Watson looking grown-up and glam... wish more young celebs would take a cue from her.
And wouldn't a wall of curly script be a fun addition to any home? I sure think so! Only, what words would I choose?
where you can find me...
I'm off for the rest of the morning... to take in as much ArtPrize with the family as is possible! And maybe a few hot dogs from The Dog Pit too. See you on the flip side...
one LAST before and after!
Whew... are you sick of glossy white makeovers yet? For the record, I am not! But here's a quick recap: glossy white floral wall hangings, glossy white table and now the makeover of the mirror frame that I recently found in the TRASH! And yes, it's glossy white...
Here was what the mirror likely looked like in it's previous life:
I found this at the antique store a couple weeks back marked $120. But mine (below) I found with the mirror cracked and in the trash down the road a bit... I took it apart and found a piece of wood hanging around the garage. My husband cut the wood to fit and drilled new holes to attach the frame to the wood. What a guy!
Next up... white spray paint for the frame and chalkboard paint for the wood background. Here's a close up:
I just love the detailing!
Now it hangs as an inspiration board/meal planning board near the eating area and my desk!
(sorry for the photo quality... no sunshine here in days! :( )
I call it a "free" project... my husband adds up little odds and ends we needed (paint, chalkboard paint, screws, and his time) and prices it out at about $30... either way - it was worth it! Now it houses my current favorite Bible verse, this fall it will likely be meal plans!
MORE before and afters!
Woo hoo! Don't you just love before and afters.... I just do. I love them. The house has been a flurry of painting and miscellaneous projects. We have been without a dining table for like 5 days and the dishwasher is on the fritz so the kitchen has been full of everything that is usually on the dining table (including meals - standing up for my husband and I) and dishes and whew. It's a bit much. But today things are finally getting put back together and I think it's all worth it.
Want a looky-loo?
Let me start by saying we had a rectangle table in our very small eating area (can't really call it a 'dining room') and it just didn't work. My husband and I had bought the table before we were even married, but it held up well (thanks, IKEA!) and wasn't so bad. This is what it looked like (I don't know why the chairs aren't in the picure!):
Then I saw an ad on craigslist for this table... has potential, no? On the bottom of the listing it said they would take the table on trade for a square or rectangle table! Before I knew it, we had a deal! (here it is in process of being sanded for painting... classic "wait, I need a picture for the blog" moment!)
The table even has an extra leaf (you can see it hanging out in the background of the above picture). And was the perfect size for our family of four - or more with the leaf! Plus, it fit the scale of the dining area perfectly.
Now... ta-da! The after!
The table (or the paint job) is by no means perfect... but the table was practically free and the paint job was a tag-team effort by my husband and I. We couldn't be more thrilled after only investing about $20 in paint ("Frost" by Behr, if you are curious) and polyurethane.
I still need a rug solution... the original rug (see top picture) will work, it's just a cheap-y from IKEA though. I would love a round rug, but they seem hard to come by and expensive. Since my budget is pretty much ZERO dollars I think I am going to have to get creative with the existing. Think I could paint bold stripes on that fabric IKEA rug??? ...hmmmm.
Don't tell my husband, but I might have another project brewing! (also it's his birthday today! Happy Birthday Dear!)
