shopping guide: {family cold weather wear}
This time of year you and your family can never have enough cold weather wear! That is at least, here in the 'great North'! But I have found because of this that they also make for great gifts for the whole family. It never fails that mid-season a glove goes missing, your child's hat disappears in the snow fort not to be found until spring or you thought you could brave without a hat... but you can't. And as far as gifts go, the price point can't be beat! And just think of how warm your loved one will feel... all because of you! So practically, cold weather wear is about as value-based as it gets!

more dresses...
I completely fell in love with this dress at Target the other day... now I just need to find an excuse to wear it. How cool would it look with some fun and bold accessories... yellow? red?

good LOOK for less: Sue, she's heading back to work!
Sue sent me an email recently requesting a good LOOK for less consultation... here's her situation:
Well, well, well Sue. First off, congrats on the new job and adventure! Now, let's get shopping, shall we?
Seeing as she is just getting started on her career wardrobe I went with really solid mix and match pieces in neutral colors. This will help build the foundation of her career wardrobe that will last for many years, seasons and trends. But of course I included some fun bold hues to add interest and keep it fresh. With her $400 budget I was able to compile 16 new wardrobe pieces... including a suit, two pairs of shoes and a handbag... not bad! This is what it looks like:
Back in my working days I depending heavily on Ann Taylor Loft for suiting. I think they are really great value (cost to quality). A black suit is a GREAT buy, because the jacket and pants can be separated for really easy mixing and matching. Here I love the basic suit with a really bold top.
Pairing a simple wrap-style dress with a suit jacket makes it perfect for days busy with meetings. I love how the bold ring and necklace create interest with ease.
This is a perfect business casual outfit without being boring. The bold scarf and printed shirt add interest without being over the top. A simple black pump can be a really versatile piece... if you are in a business setting this pair of shoes is a must have - especially on a tight budget because they go with almost everything!

I am currently a stay-at-home mom of two. This fall my youngest goes to 1st grade and I have decided to on-ramp back into my career now that the kids will be at school. I am excited and nervous. I will be working as a legal assistant in a near-by city. The dress code for the office is "business casual" but through the interview process I get the feeling it's a touch above business casual and I'll need at least one business suit for special meeting days. I have been out of career-mode for so long I will need ALL new business attire. I'd like to start with some real basics. I love color and some trendy edge to my clothing pieces, but I will be in a conservative office, so I have to balance that. My budget is $400, with hopefully (fingers crossed) a suit included in that amount. I can't wait to see what you are able to come up with for me!

do you "dress"?
Lean in, I have a little secret for you...
If you wear dresses in the summer, you don't have to coordinate tops and bottoms. Isn't that revolutionary?
To which you likely respond: "Yes, Jill, we already knew that. Like, everyone knows that."
Oh right.
I don't like dresses much (or never used to I should say) or shorts... because I don't really like my legs and they always seem to be pale and ugly. Enter my gym membership this year along with a pool membership and suddenly my legs are bare-able. Literally. Whew, so thank goodness for that because I just realized that dresses are the easiest outfit out there! Not that I didn't sorta kinda know that before, it just applies more personally now.
Yesterday I pulled out an adorable dress that I got in my early pregnancy with my second child for a warm weather trip... it was just flowy enough to cover my expanding waist line at the time. It wasn't an actual "maternity" dress... so it has been hanging out in the closet for some time. I whipped it out in desperation of nothing to wear yesterday and fell head over heels for dresses again!
So in the spirit of my new-found love of dresses... let's find some. On the cheap, shall we!?!?
This simple dress could be paired with heels and a jacket for the office or just flats and some fun earrings for a day at the beach or shopping. So cute and easy!
I just love the cool texture on this dress. I personally would pair it with some gladiators and a belt (so that it doesn't feel like a potato sack) and then call it good. The argyle pattern adds enough interest to go ultra simple.
Don't let the maxi style dress think that this is a "formal" dress by any means! Pair with a very simple pair of sandals and a sun-hat and this is ready for a day at the park or the farmers market.
And this doesn't really qualify as a day dress, but it was too gorgeous to not share... absolutely perfect for a summer wedding... ahhh. And it's less than $50. Does any one have a wedding they could invite me to so I can wear this... you can get back to me on that.

a little window shopping...
This morning I had to stop by the mall to have my iphone looked at at the Apple store. Of course, there was some other "window" shopping involved! I just can't stop by the mall without popping into a few stores!
I decided to stop at Gap because their windows looked so fresh and spring-y. Now let me say this, I am a huge fan of the Gap, I know it has it's ups and downs... but for the most part they consistently deliver classic Americana fashion. Pieces you will own forever and that likely won't be "in" or "out" of style. But sometimes, for me, this makes the Gap a little boring.
Today I was pleasantly surprised by their selection and COLOR! They have tons of spring and classic pieces that I instantly fell in love with...
These two denim pieces are on my "to buy" list. I know I am a die hard sevens fan... but I loved the unique look of the cropped paint splattered jeans (I think they look a million times better in real life) and the straight leg pair were gorgeous in person! I am a straight leg fanatic right now!
How adorable is this top? With all the knitting I have been doing lately I bet I could recreate this crochet motif... kinda like my ruffled tank I made a couple weeks back, huh? I'll get back to you on that!
I loved the simplicity of this belt... for the summer with a white t-shirt and shorts or jeans, how cute would this be?

new current look up...

Hooked On: Butcher Block Counters
Our kitchen is in SEVERE need of a remodel... ugliest. cabinets. ever. And the countertops run a close second. But kitchens are expensive and we have absolutely no budget for it now!
The cabinets need to be replaced, there is no painting, resurfacing or "working with them" here folks. They are ugly and even more cheap than ugly. The shelves sag with the weight of my dishes and the layout is all wrong! So we know those need to be replaced.
While we have accepted the cost to replace the cabinets. The counters are another story. Granite is glorious, quartz is luscious and concrete is swoon-worthy. But all are quite pricey, no?
In working to think outside the box a bit... I realized a less expensive and yet very attractive countertop option! Butcher block! Ikea has some really great sizes and finishes and working with a talented carpenter, I think we could finish them quite nicely.

let the swooning begin...
I don't know why I even step foot in Nordstrom Rack... there is just WAY too much good stuff there! Recently I did go with a solid purpose, but was foiled. I was shopping for some shoes for my little girl, big surprise I didn't find any...
But I did find some fab stuff for me! This is only a glimpse... there was seriously SO MUCH GOOD STUFF!

This is a bad picture... but I found more Tory Burch goodness. These awesome heels were priced at $169.99. Sweet shoes - a little out of my price range for two reasons: I have black pumps with gold accents already and I was going to find $20 shoes for my little gal. Rats.
This little number was KEEEEY-UTE! oh, and did I mention it is Marc by Marc Jacobs at the incredible Nordstrom Rack price of $139.99 (I don't know what the orig price was) and then marked 50% off of that! I am still sad I didn't snag it! It was so cute and swingy! Maybe it will still be there...
Oh well, budgets are a you-know-what! Plus, I need spring and summer clothes and neither of these really fit in that category.

my new five minute face...
I've mentioned before that I have only two go-to brands for beauty/skincare - that way when I need a product I am not willy nilly picking up things here and there.
However.... These two products caught my eye this weekend at Target (of course!) and against my "policy" I picked them up!
I am so glad I did and they are now the components of my NEW spring five minute face!
Both are INCREDIBLY easy to use and combined with a bronzer blusher (that I also picked up this weekend of the same brand but can not for the life of my find onlind - boo!) and mascara are my 5 minute face! What's yours?

Fashion Friday... snakeskin flats!
I fell in love with these snakeskin flats straight away when I found them on piperlime yesterday! I just love a dash of orange... and snakeskin accessories are HOT, HOT, HOT for spring and summer.
