shopping guide: puffers!

A few weeks back I featured some great winter coats that were dressier. I like to have a few styles in my arsenal and a puffer coat is definitely one of them. They are so warm and cozy and this season I am loving the slimmer and sleeker versions that I have been seeing. Here are some great examples. I would wear EACH of these... they are all so cute!

(1. Lodge Puffer Vest, JCrew. $118 2. Puffer Vest, Gap, $59.50 3. Coffee Shop Puffer, Target, $59.99 4. Callie Nylon Puffer, Delia's, $69.50 5. Long Belted Puffer, Gap, $128 6. Puffer Jacket, Gap, $98)

beach bound...

Can you believe we are one week away from Memorial Day Weekend? The. official. start. of. summer!?!?

Yippeee!

The temps are finally starting to reflect that and I'm thinking of maybe a little day trip to Lake Michigan this weekend. Of course, I'll need something fabulous to wear. My nails will need to be in tip-top shape and some sunnies or a hat will definitely be in order!

Here's my picks... all under $100!

I'll be all blue in this outfit... blue, in the best way possible!

A hat, a teeny bikini and a fun beach bag make this look a hit!

I love the juxtaposition of the blue and red in this outfit... how cute!?!

And for the girly girl, this outfit is peachy-keen!

Have a great weekend... what are your plans?

stuck in a rut?!

If you subscribe to my newsletter - which you SHOULD (sign up here!) - you would have gotten a sneak peek at this new series here on the blog called "stuck in a rut"!

This series is where I offer updated and modern alternatives to the items in our closet that may be getting outdated! Ever find yourself grabbing for the same unflattering pieces in your closet? This new series is going to put an end to that! I will lay out common "go-to" items in your closet and suggest updated pieces to replace the outdated ones!

(details: Women's Coral Ruffled Bomber, Old Navy, $29.50, Washed Metal Corner Tote Bag, Topshop, $80, Tretorn Shoes, Delia's, $55.50)

As the temperatures warm up for spring are you turning to that same ratty hoody for a jacket? Spruce up your look with an updated jacket in a bold color and sophisticated fit. Are you still carrying a diaper bag even though you have no need for burp rags, bottles and pacifiers any more? Change it up with a classy but casual tote that is still big enough for all your essentials but keeps you looking more like a woman than a mom! Do you throw on gym shoes even when you aren't headed to the gym? Save those shoes for working out and chose a sleeker and trendier option without sacrificing comfort.

Do you have any ruts that you are in that you need help to get out of? Email me and I will try to feature it here! Stay tuned for more rut busting goodies here on the blog!

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Holly!

Today's good LOOK for less EXPRESS consult is for Holly... here's a bit about her:

I am a 26 year old who's just moved to San Francisco. I am a house manager. Most of my week is spent running errands, overseeing staff/projects, hanging with the kids, cooking and tidying up. When I look in my closet I see nothing that fits or that is appropriate for the eratic and ever changing weather in the city. Can you suggest some looks that will keep me professionally polished, yet still able to chase after kids and spilt milk while also warm?

Layering seems to be the key here along with some casual and versatile pieces that can be dressed up easily with some nice accessories... so here we go!

Isn't a trench coat mandatory if you live in San Fran... seems like it would be! I love that this one has a touch of sheen to it to snazzy it up a bit. Mixed with some basics it's smoldering, no?

Here a simple t-shirt is dressed up with some fun texture around the neckline and a simple blazer slips on and off for quick changes in the weather. I love the accessories with this one... so modern yet simple.

Again, layers that are easy to shed or add on to at any time are key. Here I paired them with some bright corduroy's that "make" the entire outfit! I love these fun and youthful accessories!

Happy Shopping Holly!

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Katrina!

Today's good LOOK for less EXPRESS consult is Katrina... here's a bit about her:

I am a working mom and my husband and I have a beautiful 22 month old son. I work full time for a community college. I'd say my work environment is business, but I rarely wear suits. I consider my style classic and my absolute modern fashion icon is Reese Witherspoon. I need work appropriate, fashionable, classic outfits but also something I can wear on outings with the family - running errands, heading to the Christmas tree farm to pick out our tree and running about with an active almost two year old. I love fashion, but wouldn't say I'm trendy. I also recently found out we have a new baby on the way next summer so transitional outfits maintaining style will be important. I strongly believe that just because I'm a mom doesn't mean I can't have style!

A baby on the way! How fun! Here's a couple of looks I pulled together for you Katrina:

This is a simple and transitional outfit for hanging out with the kiddo, running errands or even dinner out with your husband... if you can find the time! The top and cardigan can get you through the first months of pregnancy and the first few post-natal months as well. Just swap out some maternity jeans in between and you are all set!

This is a great holiday activity outfit, whether ice skating with the kids, attending a tree-lighting or doning a saw and cutting your own tree, you will be comfy and picture perfect in this outfit for all of your outdoor holiday activities!

For holiday parties or a day at the office, this dress will again work through the beginning months of your pregnancy comfortably. Paired with some snazzy hoisery and a ruffly handbag this is a fun and festive outfit!

Enjoy and Happy Shopping Katrina!

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Ashley!

Ashley's quick with the emails on a Monday morning (don't forget, if you want a new (FREE!) good LOOK for less EXPRESS consult, you do to!) and she's got a keen sense of style as well... she just needs a little help pulling it all together.

Here's a bit of her email to me:

I am a 26 year old newlywed English Ph.D. student and part-time composition instructor at a community college. I really need to amp up my "leisure" wardrobe. I have a hard time finding something cute to wear out on the weekends. Our weekends aren't glitzy, but consist of going out to dinner, girls night out, or more casual bars (as opposed to dancing/expensive bars). I want to look pretty and special, but understated: casual cool chic. I want my clothes to say something about me: that I'm artsy, creative, fun.

For Ashley's new looks I gave her a couple outfits that are definitely casual, cool and chic.

For a cozy winter night with your closest friends at your favorite dive bar (who doesn't love a dive bar with great company!?!?) this outfit has it all. Comfy, yet stylish flats, a cozy sweater, a french chic striped top and a bold belt to say "While I'm comfy I'm still polished!" and lastly a unique necklace to pull it all together. Michigan winter nights have never looked so good!
Old Navy at ShopStyle

Did someone say girls night!?!? This ensemble screams girls night out! It is fun, a little sexy and very sophisticated - but NOT stuffy! Heels are fun to wear when you want to feel extra special... but if you aren't feeling the heels... flat knee high boots (similar to the ones in the final look below) will work just as well!
Forever 21 at ShopStyle

This last outfit can do it all on a weekend... from errands to shopping to dinner to a movie. Bold color and fun accessories give this outfit personality without suffering on the practicalities!
Forever 21 at ShopStyle

Happy Shopping Ashley! Have fun with all of your new looks!

I hope you enjoyed the first good LOOK for less EXPRESS consult! Don't forget... to get yours be the first of two to email me at 8am (EST) sharp on Monday mornings! A great way to start your week, don'tcha think?
