Elements of Style v.4!

I personally have three simple elements (or tricks!) to a simple but beautiful outfit. I call them them my 'elements of style'. They are something casual, something neutral and something dressy. These three elements combined are my fail-safe for outfits that are easy to put together and that look and feel feminine and relaxed.

Shorts are such a staple for summer time fun... but they can also be dressed up for an evening out with friends or (gasp!) if you could get away with it a casual Friday in the office.  Choosing key pieces to dress up shorts without going overboard is key.  These heels are the perfect piece to bring these eyelet shorts from ready for the park to ready for the evening. A chambray top keeps the look grounded (roll up the sleeves messily for a summer-chic look) while a fun clutch pulls the entire look together.

(get the look: sunglasses, eyelet shorts, chambray top, heels - over the moon for these!, clutch)

I am signing off early for the week so I can enjoy the rest of my vacation!  I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

how to style a striped maxi!

Striped maxi skirts seem to be EVERYWHERE lately... and for good reason. It's an absolutely adorable piece and a perfect summer staple.  My bff just bought one and texted pictures of it to me, a reader just emailed wanting style tips for one and I saw a gal at the beach wearing one the other day looking super cute (she was wearing it with a striped bikini top and it was the perfect beach vibe!).

Here I took this simple piece and styled it into two ultra laid back and summer-y looks!  Now that I am seeing this skirt everywhere, I definitely think I need to add one to my closet.

the striped report!

Okay, fess up. Who's still over the top hooked on stripes? If your hand was raised, know that you are in good company, as mine is raised as well.

I just can't stop loving stripes. Can't and won't. It seems like every time I pop into a store there is a new iteration on the stripe just waiting for me to ogle it. In order to feed this long-time addiction I thought I would take a peek at what's new for stripes these days.

If you are addicted like me, this should feed your addiction just fine. I know it did mine!

(above: slouchy top, scarf, espadrilles, tote, blazer - also available in white!, earrings)

Are there any new striped pieces you are looking to add to your closet soon? That slouchy tee and those flats are REALLY calling my name... well all of it is really!

what to pack: beach week!

It's that time again... time for our family's (almost) annual trip to the beach for the week.  Living in West Michigan we are SO incredibly lucky to have the Great Lakes surrounding us.  For the last few years we have headed out to stay at the beach for a week and even though it's only 35 minutes away from home it feels like we are a million miles away.  If you have never experienced Lake Michigan before in your lifetime you absolutely must... you wouldn't believe that all this beauty and fun is hiding right in the middle of the same state that has such nasty winters. (if THIS or THIS doesn't make you want to head to the beach... I don't know what will!)

We rented a condo with our friends from Seattle and we plan on spending an inordinate amount of time at the beach, lots of time catching up, grilling out and imbibing cocktails, indulging in lots of ice cream, letting the kids run wild and in general just letting our hair down for a week.  I could really use it right about now!

My packing plan is light and simple... a few dresses, shorts, and tees, a little jacket if the evenings get cool and a bathing suit (or four).  As I usually do, I pick a color or two to base my packing list around. This time it is yellow & pink. I find that basing my packing on two colors + neutrals helps me minimize the amount of pieces I take and makes dressing easier when I arrive - everything matches!

1. hat - an absolute must for shading my face
2. linen sweater - this is super light weight for early mornings at the farmers market or evenings on the patio
3. striped dress - a perfect cover up or after-sun dress
4. neon shorts - looks good with a tan! (wink, wink)
5. "ice cream" tote - a tote for all the sunscreen and magazines is a must!
6. sandals - I love these simple sandals!
7. striped top - I can't leave home without at least one striped top!
8. tank - perfect for throwing over a swim suit!
9. & 13. swim top & bottom - I love this pattern!
10. sunglasses - I plan on wearing these every waking moment!
11. white denim jacket - I forgot I had this and "found" it in my closet, can't wait to wear it for cool evenings!
12. denim shorts - these might just get worn every day!
14. sperry topsiders - perfect for evening walks!
15. simple dress - in case we decide to head out to dinner one night.

casa good life: my (updated) closet!

Waaaay back when I did a post on my closet and how I organized it.  You guys loved this post and to this day I still think it is in the top 3 posts ever for this blog.  But then my closet got really full, really messy and I was completely frustrated with it.  I researched a million options, searched Pinterest for hours on end for ideas (of which there seemed to be very few for a small walk in closet) and in the end settled on a pretty inexpensive (I think I paid $350 or less on supplies/furniture) and MUCH needed renovation plan.

I will also say my husband and I did this in about 24 hours - not recommended, but we did it.  I wanted to share my closet again on the blog for a lot of reasons.  The first being when I went to find inspiration I had a hard time finding it... so here is yours and the second being that this blog has always shown the evolution of my style and it makes sense to have it feature the evolution of my closet too, right? Also I know that the internets are nosey (heck, so am I!) so I think you gals will like this post! Here is the final product... click through below to get all the details!

my everyday style: a simple tee!

As I laid out in yesterday's post... I love to throw on a tee with some white jeans and fun accessories and call it an outfit.  This type of outfit is just too easy.

Lately I am loving carrying a clutch.  It seems perfect for my light-weight summer style. So effortless and just the bare basics can fit inside.  If you haven't noticed, I completely crave simplicity lately.  I think it has something to do with growing older and (hopefully) wiser. Learning that less is more has taken me too long to learn, but now that I have learned it... I find the simplicity addicting.  I am looking for ways to simplify in all areas of my life.

how to style a t-shirt! (stylishly!)

With summer time comes an influx of t-shirt wearing... but jeans and a t-shirt or shorts and a t-shirt need not be boring or sloppy!  You can certainly dress up a tee while maintaining it's laid back summer vibes all season long.

Here I pulled together three basic tees and styled them casual and pulled together.  The first look is perfect for a business casual sumer look or casual Friday at the office.  Mini polka dotted trousers paired with a tee and refined accessories looks stunning.  The second look is perfect for a summer day hanging at the park, on a picnic or running errands. This look proves that tees can be casual and pulled together looking all at the same time. And the third look is a simple outfit for many occasions and it just so happens to be one of my personal fall-back looks. A colored tee with white pants works any day of the week in my book!

How do you like to style your tees in the summer to keep them looking fun and fresh, and definitely not frumpy!?!?

10 summer sandals you will (flip) for!

Between sunny days, warmer temps, the kids being out of school and already having spent an inordinate amount of time at the pool there is no doubt that summer is in full swing in these parts.  I am loving the longer days, the relaxed schedule and of course the simple and casual style that comes with the season.  Tees, tanks, shorts and sun dresses are on constant repeat and while I feel like my summer wardrobe is complete, there is no denying that there is always room for another pair of sandals in the closet.

Not only are sandals easy and comfortable to wear, but they also completely embody the mood of the season. With their variety in color, texture, silhouette and materials, they can range from simple to whimsical and everywhere in between.  In my mind, they are the key component to making summer dressing fun.

Since I never feel like sandal shopping season is over (well, unless the leaves are falling... but that is a long way off) I rounded up 10 fabulous summer sandals you will love.  And to sweeten the deal and make sure there is no summer shopping remorse... all of these beauties will only set you back $60 or less.  Now that is just my style (in more ways than one)!

What is your sandal style? Are you more of a boho chic gal like #7? Or a simple but sophisticated gal like #9? Do you go for perennially classic looks like #3? Or a ultra simple flip flop like #2 or #4?

Do tell!

ps. If you have a minute today... be sure to check out the recent interview I did with fellow blogger at Wake Up Your Wardrobe!  I dished on my favorite post I've ever written, why I love blogging, tips if you are just starting out blogging and more!

elements of style v.3!

Lately the day time temps are nice and warm, but the evenings are still a little cool (in my opinion that makes for a perfect summer day!)... so for evenings I like to shed my shorts, bathing suit and tanks for a comfortable pair of jeans, a great pair of shoes and a light-weight summer sweater.  It's perfect for catching an evening ball game or dining al fresco with friends.

I hope you have a stylish and enjoyable weekend... enjoy this simple look! I plan to recreate it myself this weekend!

my everyday (workout) style: with Old Navy Active!

How are your New Years Resolutions now that it's six months later?  Mine took a nose dive earlier this spring, so sad to admit!  But now that bathing suit season is here I am back to working out regularly.  Thankfully!

I'm not one to think of working out as "fun" so I need a little more of a boost to get me out of bed and out to the gym in the morning.  Recently I changed up my workout routine by trying new classes which helps a lot by motivating me to conquer something new.  And of course, new workout clothes always helps!

Old Navy has all of their Active pieces on sale at up to 40% off right now. If that isn't enough motivation for you, I don't know what is!  Hop on over to Old Navy stores on online to check out all of their amazing Active picks. My favorite are these cropped compression pants and bubble tops (I own two of each and LOVE them!).  There is something for everyone, so be sure to check out all of their offerings!

10 Father's Day Gifts for the Dapper Dad! (what the guys really want!)

Father's Day is already this weekend and if you are like me you are already planning how to spoil the guys/dads in your life!  Here I rounded up 10 things that my husband already owns and loves or that I would love to spoil him with.

How do you celebrate Father's Day? A nice relaxing day at the pool or beach would be just my guys style.  And then perhaps some grilling for dinner to top the day off.  However you decide to fete your father, do it in style!
Ray Ban aviators... my husband loves these, and I love the way he looks in Ray Bans. Win-win!

Timex Camp Watch... perfect for the weekend... or camping!

'Who's Your Daddy' Tee... um, yes!  For the Star Wars loving dads out there.

Magic Wallet... my husband loves these things. Plus, they don't break the bank!

Nike Sneakers... I love a good pair of retro sneaks.  So do guys.  This pair is amazing.

Chambray Shirt... it's a basic must have for the guys too!

Striped Belt... for the religious belt wearer (is your husband one too?) on the weekends.

Red Chinos... would your guy wear these? I am in love with them.

Sperry Topsiders... my husband just got his first pair and he is hooked - it's not hard with these casual and comfortable summer shoes.

Superman Mug... for superman of course! Perfect for his morning cup of joe!

my everyday style: a little tank dress!

With summer in full swing my daily outfits have gone from pretty basic and simple to ridiculously basic and simple.  Take this tank dress for instance... so easy, so comfortable and being that it's bright pink it completely distracts you from it's basic-ness.  Score!

As a child of the 80's I am loving the opportunity to revisit fun 80's trends (neon!) with a more sophisticated take on it.  Matching my neon dress to my neon bracelet was the weekend highlight of my inner 10 year old.  However my more grounded 30-something self was sure to add a nice neutral piece, like this handbag, to balance the look out.

Plus, I figure I better take advantage of this neon trend now... if it takes another 20 + years to recirculate in the trends I may not be up for it then. It's hard to say.

What to wear to a summer wedding!

Spring wedding season has blurred directly into summer wedding season and it's in full swing!  If you have an invitation (or four) that is just sitting their taunting you about what you will wear, then look no further!

Today I've compiled three fun and flirty summer wedding looks to keep you cool (who else sweats buckets at summer weddings? I've been known to), stylish and ready to have some fun fete-ing your favorite newlyweds!

Is it just me? I am always drawn to a white dress when I start thinking what to wear to a summer wedding. They are just perfect for summer... but NOT perfect for a wedding. You don't want to up-stage the bride in white. That is why this touch-of-white dress is perfect! And those pleats are just made for dancing!

Layers of scallop trim is oh so fresh and fun and girly! Perfect for a garden wedding or a sweet afternoon soiree. Sweet simple looks like this one are effortless for wedding season!
(above: dress - only $35!, necklace, shoes, clutch, bracelets - choose one or more!)

A navy dress is the epitome of class for a wedding. It looks amazing and slimming and ultra modern and it's also really easy to style with myriad accessories. Navy is always a win in my book!

pulled from pinterest...

I am not ashamed to admit that I am obsessed with Pinterest... from decorating my home to getting dressed in the morning to planning meals and parties, Pinterest is my go-to source for life and style these days.

It is not rare for me to pull outfit inspiration from my "My Style" pinboard on a regular basis.  From time to time I will look through my older pins and find inspiration I had forgotten about... I originally pinned this image a while ago and loved rediscovering it over the weekend. What a fun color combo! No?  It would be so fun to wear this summer.  And if you like it too I pulled some pieces together that will help you pull off this Pinterest look too!

So tell me... would you try this fun color combo?

my everyday style: a series of 'cheats'!

This outfit is a series of "cheats". And by "cheats" I mean pieces that do all the style-work for me (or you, if you want to steal my cheats, which by all means... go ahead and do!).

Cheat #1: Start with a sweater so comfortable you could wear it everyday.
Cheat #2: Add a necklace so bold it catches the eyes of innocent passerby's.
Cheat #3: Top it off with a yellow bag will take your outfit to amazing places, and it's just a bag at the end of the day.

Result: I bet that necklace distracted you from my plain old denim shorts.
Result: I bet that yellow bag distracted you from my simple and practical flip flops.

See I tricked you into thinking that I was wearing something more meaningful than I really was. I'm actually a big lazy bum. :)

May... the damage!

Each month this year I have paused at the end of the month to take a look at my spending as it's related to my closet. Each month my target budget is $300.  For some this may sound like a lot and for others it may not... for me personally this is my monthly goal. It works for my budget and lifestyle and doesn't break that bank.  Shopping budgets are a personal thing, but I share mine here to show how I stretch my budget and work to create a well curated and fully stocked closet.

Some months doing this post is like nails on a chalkboard to me... it's not exactly pleasant!  This past month I went way over budget - eek! However I will say that I have absolutely no shoppers remorse and I never put clothing items on a charge card so I don't feel guilty. (note: I do use a Gap card to take advantage of cardholder perks but I pay off my balance each month, no questions asked. I do not recommend spending more than you are able. Ever.)

What I enjoy about these posts is that is does make me take a hard look at my closet and spending whereas in years past I haven't been so vigilant about it.

Total Spent: $562.44 (total saved: $283.70)

Some thoughts on the budget... obviously, it's blown. BUT I saved a lot. So I feel good about the savings. And most importantly I love all the pieces I purchased, so budget-be-damned I am happy with my spending for this month. I also have been telling myself that I should take a break for June. We will see if I can hold out on that, usually I'm not very good at it.  I will say however, in past years my heaviest times of spending are spring and fall. So I may be able to resist.

Some thoughts on the pieces... A few of the pieces were replacement items (leggings & flip flops) but most of my spending this month was focused on summer apparel.  Gap and J.Crew Outlet were my large hauls and both of those were at a really great discount (30% off and 50% of respectively).  My purchases from Gap were super basic and versatile and ALL of the pieces that I purchased there this past month are already in heavy rotation, so I know I made sound purchases.  The J.Crew Factory purchases were a STEAL in my book at 50% off (their Memorial Day sale).  Every time I buy from J.Crew Factory I am more and more surprised at the gorgeous pieces, the great quality and the prices. I think that this is one of my favorite stores these days.

I will also say that I have really enjoyed getting dressed each day. First it's fun to have new pieces (that is always the case) but summer dressing is so fun. I find a lot of joy in my carefully curated closet these days and I think there is something commendable about that. I really, really like clothes. I do!  So I like to see that I am investing in ways to make the process of getting dressed fun lately.

Think I can go without spending in June? (we are 6 days in and so far so good!)

the mom wardrobe essentials! (summer edition!)

I'm so excited to bring back another installment of the "mom wardrobe essentials"!  This round I focused on simple and versatile pieces for the summer months.

The "mom wardrobe essentials" are based on a simple premise: they are stylish and put-together grab-and-go pieces for busy moms.  Forget the yoga pants and the gym shoes... I know that those pieces are often easy to grab when you head out with the kids, but they are lacking in femininity, style and really aren't all that flattering.  From the many moms I talk to, we all agree it is simple to decide what to wear to the office, or out on a date or other adult on adult time.  However, often times it's hard to find wardrobe pieces that work for the in between times - after the gym, school pick up, hanging out at soccer practice, playdates and the like.  Would you agree?

These 11 simple pieces will be an effortless foundation for your summer wardrobe and will leave you feeling good about yourself and feeling beautiful!

1. One bold and fun necklace will take several outfits to a whole new level.
2. A simple white oxford top is versatile and stylish (roll up the sleeves for warmer days).
3. T-shirts are my lifesaver this time of year. I love to dress them up or throw them on with shorts.
4. A striped scarf is perfect for cool mornings or cold grocery stores and adds texture and interest to any outfit.
5. A maxi dress with a conservative cut is a great outfit on a moments notice. Have a few of these on hand!
6. Maxi skirts are comfortable and modest (am I the only mom whose kids are always pulling on my clothes?) and goes with simple tees for a comfortable but stylish look.
7. A large tote stylishly doubles as juicebox holders, etc, etc for the long summer months.
8. Simple nude flats go with EVERYTHING and they are so comfortable.
9. Boyfriend shorts are relaxed and comfortable, perfect for the park and playdates.
10. No I'm not crazy. White jeans are great for busy moms.  They look very pulled together for lunches or museums and get stain-sticked and washed at the end of the day.
11. I live in flip flops in the summer. I like a nice "dressier" pair to have on hand for comfort and style.

my everyday style: shredded boyfriend jeans!

Oh boy! I have not done an outfit post here in a while, huh? Sorry for the radio silence on the photos lately... I have no excuse!  I have thoroughly enjoyed getting dressed these days... I was so over winter!  I am still surprised by warm temps and sun each day.  This weekend we had a little cold snap but after spending a few weeks in shorts and dresses it was nice to break out some jeans again (especially these amazing jeans!).

My husband and I went out for a quick dinner just the two of us this past weekend and this is what I wore.  A little dressed up and a little casual.  It was very difficult to put these jeans away at the end of the evening, I am in love with them!
