work it wednesday!

About this time of year I start freaking out when I see the new fall lines and want to snatch everything up. All of the new hues and cozy looks are alluring, but even more so I begin to worry I will literally be left "in the cold" in my summer wear.

As we move from summer to fall I thought it would be appropriate to give some tips on how to transition pieces so that they work for both seasons. Hopefully it will stretch your budget and your creativity a bit! (Also a quick shout out to reader Amy that recently wrote me an email asking for some of these exact tips! Here you go Amy!)

Layering is really the key here... I'll show some "summer" wardrobe pieces all dressed up for cooler months below...

one. notice a maxi dress under there? Recycle your easy, breezy maxis into cool weather wear with chunky cardigan and boots!

two. flats and jean skirts are summer wardrobe staples. With tights and a cozy top, this outfit is set for when the temps drop!

three. don't pack away those flirty, flowy tank tops. Simple pair them with a tailored jacket and boots and your warm through winter! To keep things fun and interesting don't forget to add some fun bangles in bright colors!

work it wednesday!

So colored denim was met with mixed reviews on Monday...

And in some ways I can relate, they are a bit different than even what I am used to wearing... but I really like the idea of them. Mixed and matched in these amazing outfits, don't you think they are suddenly more of a possibility?

So, the verdict?

Work it Wednesday!

Can you believe it is the fourth this weekend, already? To me this holiday always means summer is about half over... so sad! But I love celebrating the fourth with some down home fun. Sunglasses, sparklers, watermelon, parades and fireworks.

Here is three simple and casual ways to show your patriotism this year...

What will you be doing for the holiday?

work it wednesday (on Thursday)!

Again... Wednesday just blew right past me and here I am on Thursday still pining for a Work it Wednesday, how about you?

I am going to go super basic... the easiest of the easiest, the most comfortable of all, the classic, the timeless:

the white t-shirt.

Who doesn't just love a white tee? Especially when the temps soar I just love the feeling of a simple white t-shirt on my shoulders (tanned, of course!). Always in style, but need not be boring:

Here are a couple of great white t-shirts at several price points:

Work it Wednesday: Destroyed Denim!

I am just loving all of the destroyed denim that is popping up on sites and at retailers this spring... I feel like we got a glimpse at this trend earlier this spring and that going through the summer and into fall it will gain speed.

But being 30 and being a mom and being a bit on the conservative side... I have to ask myself: is this trend appropriate for me? If you aren't 19 and have thought about sporting this trend you may ask yourself the same thing. If you are 19... well, just go for it girl!

Here are three conservative and appropriate ways to wear destroyed denim:

Here are a couple of affordable and chic options...

I almost can't believe that cut-off shorts are coming back... I remember how I used to obsess over them in junior high. Ah, what goes around, comes around.

I absolutely LOVE this pair... the cuffs, the distressing... the price tag! It's all just perfect!

I love this skirt... I'm not such a skirt person, but I am seriously contemplating a denim skirt purchase soon.

Are you rockin' destroyed denim these days? Do tell!

Work it Wednesday (on Thursday)!

Sorry Work it Wednesday is a day late... This is one of my favorite "series" around here, but yesterday got away from me! So, whew, here we are... let's work it ladies!

So do you "tunic"? To me tunics are easy, breezy and beautiful - er, that is a commercial. But no really, a tunic is usually highlighted by beautiful detailing and adornments, they are tailored in a way that allows for comfort and movement... and as you can see with my outline below - they make an "outfit" in a snap! So yes, beautiful, breezy and easy! Isn't this Tory Burch tunic to die for!?!?! (sigh)

Love the tunic look and want some cheaper options? Glad you asked...

Fashion Friday: Nature Inspired...

Since the daffodils are still blooming in my neck of the woods... and since it is such a short lived experience... I will celebrate them once again this week with nature inspired Fashion Friday.

~~~
Happy weekend all! I am off on an impromptu trip to Chicago and there WILL be shopping involved... perhaps some mobile blogging as well, I just can't say for sure! Also... Happy May Day!
Work it Wednesday: short shorts?
I'm thinking of adding some short shorts to my summer wardrobe. Let this be prefaced by me stating that I don't really "do" shorts... I could wear jeans all summer. Yes, it gets a bit warm, but then I don't have to be self conscious of my legs... right?
But short shorts are SO cute and they are hot, hot, hot this season. So, concessions may have to be made. Here's three ways to integrate short shorts into your wardrobe effortlessly...
Will you be sporting short shorts this summer?
Work it Wednesday!
Work it Wednesday is baaaack! Have you missed it? I have...
Today's featured item is the black obi belt. I have seen these popping up in around the internet and fashion mags. I don't own one, because honestly I haven't seen them in the stores to even try on (if you know of an easily accessible one... LET ME KNOW!)
Fashion Focus at ShopStyle
I really like the look though... they are a bit fashion forward. And a touch "serious" (think Victoria Beckham)... but let's see if we can't seamlessly integrate it into a wardrobe, shall we?
From completing this little exercise it seems as if an obi belt (at least for me personally) is best "dressed down" - that takes away the severity and makes it fun and flirty!
How about you? Would you wear an obi belt?
New series!!!
Gah! It's here... this little project has been whirling in my mind for WEEKS! I am so excited to dive in and hopefully you guys will enjoy it!
I have always love, love, loved Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" - because seriously, who is this girl? Have you paid any attention at all to these awesome lyrics???? This is my kind of crazy quirkiness. So in honor of Cake's sheer genius - I am launching a polyvore series inspired by this amazing girl! Don't you want to just be her?
Today's installment... is one of a general sort... here's one rockin' chick in a short skirt/long jacket:
I will be creating fun and funky outfits on polyvore - completely inspired by this song! And I would be so, so, so pleased if you decided to play along!!! Tuesday's outfit will be to the lyrics (and the songs opening line) "... I want a girl with a mind like a diamond" and Wednesday's outfit will be to the lyrics "... I want a girl that knows what's best". You can use polyvore or whatever other editing software or creative outlet you have access to! If you have never experimented on polyvore now is your time! It can be as fun and outrageous as you can dream... or as simple. Email me (goodlifeforless (at) gmail (dot) com) or leave a comment with a link to your outfit and I will link to your blog/outfit here!
work it wednesday, folks!
Last week the internet hugged me when I introduced the concept of "working" one wardrobe piece three ways. (and more here) And who doesn't love a little internet hug here and there. Sure are less awkward than real-life ones with people you don't know... so I thought we would make it a weekly event! The post, not necessarily the hugs, but if you want to give hugs... I'll take 'em.
Today I am going to tackle layers again, because today in Michigan it was 60 and sunny and by the end of the week they are forecasting snow. So, yeah, dressing can be a little difficult these days. And to be honest, it will be this way until about April or May. Warm, cold, colder, mild, warm... etc.
This Long Slub V-Neck Tee from Forever 21 is a steal at $12.80! It may look like just a tee shirt... but here's a way to make it uber versatile! Layers are the key!
transition through seasons...
Finding pieces in our wardrobe that can transition through the seasons well is a great way to not only justify adding pieces to your wardrobe near the change of seasons... but is also a great way to shop and invest in clothing in general. One of my favorite fashion "exercises" on polyvore is to take one piece and feature it in three different outfits. I prefer to wear my clothes in a variety of different ways. You'll never see me with the same shirt/pants/accessory combinations. That is part of the fun of fashion! Here I took a really simple top from ruche (LOVE RUCHE!) and featured outfits for winter, spring and summer. All with one top!
blue top: winter, spring, summer
The fun of dressing this way is in the accessories! Spend more on accessories (at least that is what I like to do) and less on gobs of clothes that you will only wear a couple of times. All of the bottoms in these outfits are items you likely have in your closet already (or should!): jeans, classic white pant, bermuda shorts. Then by adding different handbags, shoes and jewelry you easily have three completely different outfits!
