dreamers into do-ers: what's next!?!

Today I do not have a "dreamers into do-ers" interview. Sad, I know. If you've missed any of them, you can find them here... or you could re-read them, because really, they are that good! I'm trying to decide where to go next with the series. Please chime in if you have thoughts!

In the meantime, doesn't this sum up what we have covered so far nicely? I do think so.

Found via here... but if anyone can figure out the original source (I can't) I would give you kisses. Internet kiss, that is.

january in review...

Here are the outfits I posted in January... I thought it would be fun to do a little round up and get feedback from you!

Out of these eight outfits... which is your favorite?

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Heather!

Today's good look for less EXPRESS consult is for Heather... here's a little bit about her:

I'm a 24-year-old vet student about to graduate in April. I haven't updated my wardrobe in a long time - I guess because I haven't wanted to deal with trying on clothes all day long and finding nothing I like! I guess you would call what I need business casual - we can't wear jeans but khakis and cords are fine. Most of all, I need a wardrobe that will allow me to move around, stay on my feet all day (low to mid heels or flats), and kneel/crawl around on the floor while performing exams on animals, hopefully while looking put-together! Bonus points if it all looks good under a white jacket :-)

I think business casual can be one of the harder types of outfits to put together. For some reason, which I can't put my finger on, it's an awkward place between casual and formal. But for today's outfits I hope to take some of the guesswork out of business casual and focus on simple and stylish ways to pull off this look.

For this first look I chose simple basics like a sweater tunic and corduroy jeans and added fun accessories and color. I don't know about you, but spring is already on my mind and this outfit has a definite spring vibe while still providing the warmth that February and March temps call for.
American Eagle at ShopStyle

In my opinion, really great slacks or trousers are the key to unlocking the challenges of a business casual wardrobe. High quality trousers can be a bit expensive, but with proper care and dry cleaning, they can last a very long time. I've paired great trousers here with fun and stylish tops and bold accessories to keep the entire look stylish. Plus, great tops like these can be paired with jeans for weekend and social wear.
Coldwater Creek at ShopStyle

Solid investment pieces, like trousers and blazers can also make an outfit very polished and professional looking, while fun accessories can still give your outfits personality.

my outfit: rockin' a smock!

Is it a smock or a frock? Because it's not so much a dress... I don't think I could wear it on it's own. Check out that slit up the back.

I fell in love with this dress online, and we know that doesn't always end well. I just can't ever get inspired with this "dress" - although I did like wearing this outfit. I just need more ways to style it. This doesn't happen often, but I'm stumped.

What do you all think? Upon scanning the photos again... maybe a long sleeved striped top, very french chic, would work.

I was thankful for a day where the temps almost made it to 50 degrees recently and decided to for go a big clunky coat and just wear a little jean jacket. This one is almost vintage... circa 1999. I worked at the Gap at the time and remember buying this one for full price I loved it so much (and I was in college, so full price was a big deal!).

So like 11 (eleven!?!?!?) years later it still fits like a glove and I love that it is all worn in and cozy.

And if you don't have a denim jacket, you should consider picking one up... I think they are coming back. And isn't it about time? It's been 11 + years!

what to wear: Old Navy!

Old Navy can often be a dark horse in the clothing arena... I often look to Old Navy for staples for the whole family and Old Navy never disappoints with flashes of trendy items here and there. Plus, as a mom, there are not many stores where I can pick up items for each member of the family all in one place!

Here's some fun outfits I compiled for the whole family... all with Old Navy items!

I am already dreaming of spring... can you tell?

I am loving this relaxed jacket for men... a great addition to any guy's wardrobe!

And how can you pass up a tulle skirt for little girls these days... so cute! (I wish I were 6 again!)

Reader Question!

I was so excited to get this question from a reader recently... I'll let her give you some of the details:

Hi Jill!

First time emailer, long time fan! You have such amazing style and I was hoping you could help me style this dress. You see it on me below and I linked to the original. It's for a black tie wedding at Trump's Mar-a-Lago on Valentine's Day. (let's just say I have one very fortunate friend). I have the amazing dress, but now I need to figure out shoes (gold or silver?), accessories, hair, makeup, etc. Please help! This is a huge once in a lifetime event for me.

Thank you so much!!!
Elena

First of all... I'm a little green! Mar-a-Lago!?!? It's sure to be a great time... here's what I came up with for the event for Elena. She already had the dress chosen (as she mentioned) and it is absolutely gorgeous! I actually got to see a picture of Elena in it and she looks amazing! But now for the accessories to complete the look...

I decided to go with simple gold accessories to allow the red dress to speak for itself. I suggest a side swept hair style as it is both a very modern look and shows some neck which is very sexy... it's an updated up-do. I like the idea of wearing a set of these gorgeous bangles on each arm, again a modern take on accessorizing with jewelry. And lastly the earrings are bold but not overboard. Have a great time Elena!

weekend recap

It's not often I do super exciting stuff on the weekend, so when I do... I feel compelled to share. (all iphone photos to follow, excuse the quality!)

Friday afternoon I cruised over to Chicago for a quick visit with my mom and to meet a fellow blogger for the first time! This was me driving, which I kind felt like I was doing non-stop for two days... but it was so worth it!

My mom and I hit up an amazing antique shop near her place... I don't even remember the name. It was a treasure trove of goodies... mostly stacked upon each other. But I love the thrill of the hunt. I found and fell in love with these brass lamps. The owner was only asking $75 for the pair, but all our extra money is going towards our kitchen re-do right now. So no lamps for me, but wouldn't they look amazing spray painted black? Can you find them in the "crowd"?

Next up was dinner with my mom and some of her friends and friends of friends at Carnivale. It. was. amazing. We were lucky enough to have a VIP of sorts in our group and was given the full royal treatment from the kitchen. Including trips to our table for introductions by the Head Chef Michael and the Sous Chef David and complimentary plates of creative appetizers that weren't even on the menu. All before dinner even started! When the food came, it of course didn't disappoint. I ordered the Quinoa dish that came with tons of amazing veggies, arugula and goat cheese stacked on top. Yum. I highly recommend the restaurant.

The trip was brought to a close by a super fun cupcake date with no other than Jess from MakeunderMyLife and Jess LC. We met at the very charming Molly's Cupcakes near Jess's apartment and chowed on the most delicious cupcakes ever. Jess is just as genuine and fun in person as you would expect. It was my first time meeting someone in person that I've first met through the blog. We talked about blogging, inspiration, life after kids (for me at least) and I even got a sneak peek into her new spring line, which is of course going to be amazing! Wouldn't you know it that I got to my car and realized I hadn't even snapped a picture of the two of us together. Bummer!

So that was my weekend in a nutshell. How was yours?

my outfit: sweet repeat!

As I continue to post pictures of my outfits, you all will realize that I pull from a pretty tight wardrobe. Not that I wouldn't love to have oodles of clothes... I would. But I really like to keep around what I truly love - and what fits great. But I love the challenge of styling the same piece in different ways.

Last time you saw this sweater I paired it with "browns" (boots & tee)... for today I went with "blacks" (boots & necklace). That is my number one reason for loving grey, it can really go both ways...

You may have heard me rave on this here blog about Gap's Real Straight fit jeans... this is them. And believe me, they are a dream. Not too skinny, super SOFT and very stretchy. I can't say enough good things about these jeans. And these I picked up on sale for a song. La di da - even better!

some Saturday love...

I'm not usually a Saturday post-er, but I thought that all these random things were worth posting. So it's a Saturday Smorgasbord. How 'bout that?

~~~
My brother is talented, that means he has talented friends, isn't that how it usually works?
Check out these awesome bar cards his friend Neil "concocted"... a perfect accompaniment to any bar cart, which just happen to be all the rage these days. Dang, I make it easy for you, huh? They would be a great hostess gift, bridal shower gift or housewarming gift. Here's the details. (Etsy, $20)
In college, one of my roommates started drinking manhattans. In a sea of twenty somethings holding beers he looked so damn cool. Like he knew something that we were all missing. I tried drinking one soon after, the damn thing almost killed me.
5 classic cocktail recipe cards. Martini, Manhattan, Tom Collins, Old fashioned, and Gin & Tonic.
printed on heavyweight 4.25 x 6.25 inch cards with rounded corners. 2 color front silkscreen and one color back. wrapped in newsprint.
~~~

Please tell me you have bought this book already?! I am so in love with it. Tons of inspiration, even if you don't consider yourself at the cutting edge of fashion.

(The Sartorialist, Barneys, $35)

~~~
This makes me not hate my skin in the harsh cold winter weather. Also, it smells like a dream.
(Imperialis Face Moisturizer, LUSH, $21.35)
~~~

What are you all up to this weekend? I am quick heading to Chicago to get some girl time with my mom - can't wait for a short escape! And there juuuuust might be a little blogger meet up mixed in there, so stay tuned on that! :)

Dreamers into Do-ers: Jenny of LobotoME!

Today's interview is with the brilliant Jenny from LobotoME... if you aren't familiar with the products her company sells, you can thank me later! I currently use her "Check Me" list for the grocery store and would be lost without it! She also has a penchant for Edward Cullen, so what more could you ask for in a gal-pal, right?

Let's get to the "grey matter"... shall we?

Q. What spurred you to start LobotoME?

A. I couldn’t find a weekly planner that had space for meal planning, errands, workout schedules, to do’s and grocery shopping list so I made my own! I had 50 of them printed and gave them to my friends, and then their friends wanted to buy one and a little bell went off! I also kept hearing from all of my mommy friends, “I don’t have time to take care of myself, I’m a mom.” I really, truly believe that all busy moms not only deserve time for themselves each day, but they NEED time for themselves so they can give their best self to their families. There is room on my weekly planner, every day to plan for some ME-Time. For me, this might be an hour long hot yoga class (pure joy), other days it might be as simple as waking up half and hour early, having a cup of tea and little quite time before the family is awake. It’s important to build that “ME-Time” into your days.

Q. What is the inspiration for these fun and lively products?

A. I think our mantra image (pictured below) sums up my response pretty well. We all have a lot on our plates but if we can juggle it all with grace, humor and a smile that will help us all stay sane.

Q. How has your business evolved... and how have you evolved with it?

A. It started off small - selling mostly online and then we exhibited at the National Stationary Show where the line was picked up by tons of small retailers and some major ones as well such as The Container Store. So, we went from a little itty bitty one woman show to having a warehouse, a shipping manager and a customer service assistant virtually overnight. This coincided with us adopting our son, my husband launching another company, etc. Needless to say there was a period of about 6 months when sleep was not to be had around here.

Q. What suggestions do you have for others that have a product they want to "get out there" (without spilling TOO many secrets!)?

A. I would say just do it. There are lots of ways to get started - etsy.com being a great vehicle for starting selling your product(s). A craftshow or holiday bazaar is a great start and then a national tradeshow in your product sector is the next step to get noticed but expect to spend $$$. Just make sure you have the printing or manufacturing process & distribution capacity dialed in before you launch on a national level. I know plenty of companies who got a big order but couldn't fulfill it and that was the end of them.

Q. How do you use your blog to compliment your products (or is it vice versa)?

A. My blog is my creative outlet and also a means of keeping me accountable for some of my goals (Fit ME challenge, spending hiatus, etc.) I also use my blog to show how my products are being used by myself and other guest bloggers so potential customers get a feel of how they could be used in their own lives to help keep them more organized.

Q. What is the good and the bad about owning your own business?

A. The best thing is the flexibility - I can help out in Sam's classroom in the middle of the day, we can travel whenever we want to, etc. The most challenging this is that it is ALL on your shoulders - everything from product development & design, to oversight of the manufacturing process, to balancing the books, to customer service, to shipping, etc. You are responsible in some way, shape or form for it all. We are also constantly working on leaving work alone at night or on the weekends, which is hard since we both have home offices.

Q. What do you do on the bad days to press on?

A. My favorite motivational quote is to Keep Calm & Carry On. On bad days I think its just realizing that whatever has gone wrong isn't the end of the world. We still have our health and still have each other. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer when I was 23 so usually all it takes is remembering that I am still alive and have my health. Cancer is a great perspective check.

Q. Do you celebrate your successes (even in small ways)?

A. Small successes just reaffirm we are on the right track and help keep us motivated. Big successes are celebrated usually with family trips (Disneyland, trips to the beach, etc.) This year, Will & I celebrated our anniversary and the fact that our marriage has not only survived but thrived in our chaotic world of 3 business and 2 kids by taking a trip to Mexico (sans kids)!

Q. Name one dream you have seen realized through your business (personal or professional).

A. Being able to be a mom & have a career from home is probably the biggest dream realized - as it truly is the best of both worlds.

Q. What do you have in store for 2010? Anything juicy?

A. Yes, we actually just launched a school fundraising program in conjunction with LobotoME! My prior careers were all in nonprofit fundraising and once my daughter started Kindergarten this year a light went off in my head. People are sick of buying cookie dough & wrapping paper from kids! But busy families need help getting organized, eating healthy via meal planning, etc. So I decided to launch a school fundraising program where schools earn 50% of every dollar sold. So, this year I'll be traveling around the country promoting this program at various school tradeshows and working to help schools raise money for essential programs & supplies. For more information on our No Brainer Fundraising Program visit www.LobotoME.com/fundraising

work it wednesday!

It's been a while since we've done a Work it Wednesday, no? And in usual WIW form, I am a day late. The internet would just not cooperate yesterday. Sorry folks!

Today's "work it" is for a reader that emailed me about these boots recently...

(Minnetonka Fringe Bootie, Urban Outfitters, $58)

Here's her note:

Hi.

My name is Angie and I am a 28 year old project manager for a progressive ad agency in SF. My wardrobe is very fashion forward and slightly trendy with a nice mix of vintage items and a penchant for skinny jeans (I just bought the same dark destroyed gap jeans you have) and heels. I have fallen head over heels for these moccasins from Urban Outfitters. I really want to buy them but I am not sure how I would wear them without looking like I should be panhandling in the Haight or pairing them with a plaid flannel and looking like Jackie from Roseanne.

Any ideas or suggestions?

So in true Work it Wednesday form, here are three options Angie!

Keep it casual and chic with this fun look. I am loving grey jeans these days... they seem to be a great compliment in just about any outfit. Fun pops of orange keep the look interesting.

These boots exude a certain boho look... but keep it fresh and modern with slim cords and fun accessories. I absolutely love this look!
Forever 21 at ShopStyle

Angie mentioned she likes a vintage feel to her outfits... this one has tons of vintage appeal while still fresh and modern.
Forever 21 at ShopStyle

Thank you so much for your email Angie... if you have a fashion related question for me, send them to goodlifeforless @ gmail.com - I'll do my best to answer them all!

my outfit: smitten with a sweater!

I am completely head over heels for this sweater. On a whim I tried it on recently at F21 and I knew it had to be mine. The body of the sweater is shaped like a pillow case, but the arms are fitted and while you might be scratching you head at that description... somehow it just all works.

I put this outfit together on a day that I wasn't feeling spectacular when I got out of bed and I knew it would be a quiet day at home with the kids. Leggings are perfect for those kinds of days. So is this sweater, it's the next best thing to wearing snuggly pjs all day. (and yes this is me with no makeup and hair hardly done... can't believe I'm putting these up!)

yes, please.

I'll take two. You know, just in case.

(Stripe Pocket Frock, American Apparel, $41)

good look for less: Jen, my bestie!

My best friend from college and I were chatting the other day (as we only get to do about once a month these days) and she mentioned she wanted me to pull some outfits together for her. She's a busy mom of two boys who also is a successful consultant for Arbonne International. Her days are spent as a usual mom, but most of her evenings are spent out and about at parties, shows or meeting with prospects. She wants a look that fits her work at home lifestyle, but something that also makes her presentable to customers and business colleagues as well. In general, Jen has a laid back casual style so I wanted to be sure to reflect that here in outfits that are refined, but still fit her taste.

Her budget was in the $200's, but being the good friend I am, I just had to throw in some extras (don't tell her husband it was me!). Here's what her $300-ish shopping list looks like... (click on the picture for the full list)

Next up the outfits... I kept it casual with a pair of nice jeans and a basic jean skirt - khaki skirts also look like they are on the rise for this spring, and that would make a simple swap as well.

At it's core, this outfit is just jeans and a t-shirt. But the top here has some visual interest or extra "flair" to it, so it comes off as much more than a basic tee. I added some nice boots and gold accessories and this outfit is super chic but simple at the same time!
Charlotte Russe at ShopStyle

Military style jackets, like this one, are great as a little jacket or as a permanent piece in an outfit. The outfit is a bit forward thinking to spring. Jen lives in Seattle so she doesn't have a super cold winter, but March is just around the corner!
Old Navy at ShopStyle

Short sleeved tops like this one (also featured in the outfit above)... are really hard workers in your wardrobe because they can be easily layered for winter (now) and worn on their own for spring (later).
Forever 21 at ShopStyle

Happy Shopping Jen. Love ya' girlie!
