The summer reading season is in FULL swing! I am loving finally getting to read outside in my backyard, at the beach or at the pool. Finally! There is no better place to read in my opinion. This month I read some great books that are perfect summer reads... here they are:
You Are A Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth... I am always a sucker for a good self-help book and this one is GOOD, and funny, which is a nice bonus. It seems like I have seen lots of entrepreneurs chatting about this book on the web lately so I decided to see what the fuss was about. The author is your biggest cheerleader for almost 300 pages while still being honest and realistic. There are great step by step theories to follow in this book and some really great takeaways on changing your mental mindset around money. Like many self-help books, some parts seemed repetitive but overall I really enjoyed this book. As I mentioned before, the author has a great sense of humor and it's a good kick in the pants if you are looking to take your business to the next level big or small.
One of Us is Lying... This book came as a recommendation from the new podcast Young Adulting (a podcast all about YA books that I highly recommend!) and I LOVED it. The premise is that five students enter detention on a seemingly normal day, but when one dies during the detention session the other four students become instant suspects. I love a good YA read now and then and this one was smartly written with a great twist, which I guessed about 75% of my way through the book. If you read this... did you guess the plot!?! Chime in! This is the PERFECT summer read and was a fun break from the books I usually choose. If you want a similar YA that is JUST as good and a fun short read for summer... try We Were Liars - I did NOT guess the end of that one. Such a good twist!
Educated: A Memoir... This book will go down as one of the most moving and unforgettable books that I've ever read. The book is a memoir written by a daughter of survivalist (some call them "preppers", as in prepping for the end of the world) Mormon family in rural Idaho. She and her siblings don't go to school or even have birth certificates because he father is suspect of hospitals and the government in all forms. Her mother is a midwife and she navigates a world that seems otherworldly to me and likely to most Americans. At one point she decides to go to college but with no formal education she has to teach herself how to pass the ACT on her own. It's difficult to read at many points but impossible to put down from cover to cover. If you loved The Glass Castle or The Sound of Gravel you will love this book too (or go read those - seriously so good!). I was so sad when the book was over that I have found myself googling interviews with the author just for more of her story. This is definitely one of my favorites of 2018 so far.
The Wedding Date... I found this rom-com to be compulsively readable and a really great summer read with extremely likable characters. The storyline starts great and ends great... I was a little bored in the middle but with that being said if you just want a sexy summer ready that is quick and fun - this is the book for you. You will absolutely love the characters... I know I did! The premise is that Drew and Alexa get stuck in an elevator together and sparks instantly fly... so Drew takes a risk and invites Alexa to be his wedding date to a wedding he has the following day. A long distance romance begins and neither character will admit to being hopelessly in love with the other... it's the stuff rom-coms are made of!
Now it's your turn! Chime in with what you are reading in the comments... I would love to know! Or have you read any of these... what did you think of them?
