There are SO many things that people don't tell you about motherhood before you become a mom - or that you really don't care to listen to before you become a mom. Never feeling like you can catch up on sleep, usually eating your meal cold, the daily grind of organizing everyone else's life while your own feels like it's falling apart. Or the way your heart flutters a bit when you check on them while they are sleeping and they look like angels, or the thrill of seeing a new city or having a new adventure through their eyes, or just the plain old joy of the simple things in life like sprinklers and ice cream on a hot day. There are just SO many nooks and crannies to motherhood. Some so challenging you wonder if you will all make it out alive and some full of joy your heart literally feels like it's going to burst in the best way possible.

One thing I was never prepared for is the joy I've found in parenthood by watching my children find their "thing." That thing that is solely theirs and that brings them alive. It's hard to properly explain but it's one of the most exhilarating feelings I ever had. Watching them excel, challenge themselves, fail, get up, do it again and all the while become a better person for it. It's cheesy but I absolutely LOVE being their "cheerleader" while I watch them through the process. I feel most myself because they feel most themselves. It's a beautiful thing.

For my son, it's always been soccer... he loves every sport but watching him play soccer has been one of the absolute joys of my life. He has bad days on the field - which we talk through and process - and good days on the field - that we celebrate. He gets down on himself and then pushes himself further. But it's not all sports for him either. He's incredibly kind and thoughtful, often super in tune with my own emotions and asking if he can help in any way. He takes his school work seriously and it's amazing to see how dang smart he is! For my daughter, she is also a natural athlete (these kids don't get it from me!) who loves gymnastics which has got to be one of the most challenging and brutal sports out there. I've watched her fall off the beam in front of judges, complete an entire meet with a broken finger (that I did NOT know about!) and endure super challenging training sessions. All with a smile on her face. In addition, she's a wonderful friend that is always ready to have a hearty giggle session, she absolutely loves any and all animals and shows me the world through her lens of creativity and has a unique spark for life.

Raising children is fun and crazy and challenging, but seeing them become their true selves is the payoff, in my opinion. All the endless nights, early mornings, cry sessions (theirs and mine) and bad days all pay off when I see them at peace with their lives.
