my outfit: breakin' all the rules!

"Now I hate to tell you but it's got to be said, there's a bunny on your head." This is a quote from one of the kids and I's favorite books called A Boy and His Bunny. It very cute...

ANY WAY. Back to the bunny on your head. Or my head. Or the collective, "our" head. There are some things that just HAVE to be said.

The first is easy. I have white pants (technically jeans) on and it's before Memorial Day. A "rule" that I am all about breaking. So I say to you... go forth and wear white pants... but for the love of God, don't forget to wear nude undies.

(I'm sensing I may be on a soap-box here, yes, in fact I am... keep reading if you dare or just look at the pictures, I'm fine with that too).

The next is a bit tougher... but as I said earlier, I hate to tell you, but it's got to be said. Moms give moms a bad name in the wardrobe department. I mean COME ON LADIES. I took the kiddos to the botanical gardens this morning for a little romp and some sun. It was a blast. It was also full of moms with the same idea as me.

Now I admit I sometimes go to great lengths to be overall "put together" you know... a decent stroller (come on people, stop buying those UGLY strollers!), NO diaper bags for kids that can walk and talk, my kids are dressed, my kids hair is combed - I know, really great lengths huh?

But some of these ladies don't even try with the easy things. I'm just going to come out and say it: you should brush your hair in the mornings ladies, I know a shower is tough, but a brush, come on! And your kids, I mean, they don't need to be decked out in the latest fashions, but their hair could use some brushing too and maybe even a little face wash. And don't even get me started on what the moms are wearing...

I'm not claiming I'm perfect - I am NOT! But lets TRY ladies... try to look cute... try something besides sweatpants and old ratty shoes! Try, try, TRYYYYYY!

I love this outfit and you know what, it's not that HARD or EXPENSIVE of an outfit to put together, really.

It's white jeans, a decent fitting T-shirt, a cute necklace and some sandals. I know for a fact that this entire ensemble didn't cost more than... wait for it $50. Seriously. If there is one thing I could accomplish in my lifetime it would be to have moms dress better and FEEL better about themselves everyday. We need this ladies! We are the back bones of our communities, of our families and our children look up to us!

Whew, that was a soap-box if I ever saw one. Also, while I still have the mic - stop buying fake Coach purses. Really, I am done now.

Necklace, Charlotte Russe
T-Shirt, Target

Ha...this is hilarious! Probably because I sit on the same soapbox on most of these issues :)

As an almost-first-time-mom (due in 5 weeks) I can't BELIEVE the ugly strollers out there! The one I decided on is on it's way in the mail...and it doesn't have any tacky pink or brown plaid in sight. And in my own opinion, one won't really be able to tell my diaper bag is a diaper bag, unless they look inside to see the insulated pockets.

As for hair...there is a reason I have long and curly hair: tying it into a dirty, messy topknot usually looks good and like I actually spent time on it.

Summary: I think we could be good friends and you wouldn't be embarrassed if we went to the botanical gardens together :)

OMG! Thank you for getting on your soapbox! I totally agree. I'm not a mom, but I am an auntie, so I know how tough it can be, but if you're even a little put together and put some care into how your kids look, it goes a long way for the kiddos self esteem later in life. P.S. Love today's outfit!

That's why I love these blog. I'm a mom of 2 girls - 2 years and 9 months. I'm super busy and exhausted but I wont leave the house without myself or my kids looking presentable. It might taken a little (if any) extra time in the morning. But it's worth it.

Funny story - After I had my first daughter I took her to the doctor a few days later for a checkup. The nurses thought I was the aunt because I was wearing makeup. They said most moms come in looking like the cat dragged them in.....Enough said!

I love this outfit, you look so cute! I've been eyeing that necklace for some time and now that I see it on an actual person, I think I must get it.

Let me say this: I am not a mom and I do not envy the work that goes into raising kids and then looking put together. But I know many people WITHOUT kids who think it is too much work to put on some clean clothes that aren't sweats. Now come on-this really chic outfit you have on is just as comfortable as sweats and waaaay cuter!

Question: I love the look of white pants, but I am scared of them. Do they get really dirty?

Lovely post!!! I laughed out loud at the "wear nude panties" comment (sadly, though, we have all seen at least one example where this rule was not heeded....yikes!).

I am with you, sister, do not by FAKE...for shame!

Have a great weekend!

Amen, sister!

Agreed! And I couldn't have said it better myself. There in no excuse for unkempt hair or sweatpants in public if you are not on a treadmill!

Great outfit, I can't pull off capris at all, they just feel weird on me, so I stopped trying. I love white jeans. Agreed no diaper bags after a certain point in a kids life - I actually never bought one, I just used a cute bag I already had. My child's hair always looks a mess, I can brush and brush it, but she just has my crazy hair (plus she won't wear any hair clips - it's an ongoing battle and I'm sure it's just a phase and I'm okay with it). I think the bigger issue isn't just the clothes, etc. It's women who totally lose themselves in the role (I'm guilty of it too), putting everyone else above themselves. That's probably one of the biggest issues.

I totally agree with you on this post!! I see it all the time. The kids will usually be in some cute outfits and look adorable and then the mom looks like she just dragged herself out of bed. Seriously, it looks like they have just given up completely. People, have a little pride! You don't have to be all decked out but let's make a little effort.

Wow, I thought it and you said it. Don't even get me started on the acid washes, high waisted, tapered leg, ankle length mom jeans with big white sneakers. Kills me. I work with at least a dozen of them.
Killer outfit! And I've been sporting white for a month now, so go for it!

And oh yeah, those "Goach" bags kill me, too. It's like, I know what you're doing!

Dang Jill, tell me how you REALLY feel. Ha! You know what? There have been more than a few times that it's all I can do to throw the kids in the car with their breakfast stained clothes and me with no makeup for a quick run to the grocery store. But the WHOLE time I felt so self conscious and embarrassed it just wasn't worth it. So I do agree. And I'm cracking up at the fake coach thing! I never got that either. If you are going to spend $40 on a fake just save up a little more and get the real deal people!

Great outfit! And rules like no white before memorial day just seem silly to me. But I might have trouble pulling it off, especially with the sandals, considering it is snowing here today :(

Laughing so hard here, Jill. I love it. You should get on your soap box more often.

I am totally with you! It just feels so much better to get dressed. I am way more productive and a much happier person if I put on some cute clothes. I want my kids to see their mom as a person that is interesting and well rounded.

Well said! And, the outfit? Of course perfect. Maybe it's because I have almost the same necklace!

oh, yikes, a little guilty! :) I try to put some thought into our appearances... outfits, hair brushed, CLEAN... but I am SO guilty of the ugly stroller and the big, fat ugly diaper bag! your post made me laugh! :) now I think you have to give us some cute, budget friendly ideas for diaper bags and strollers!

You are hilarious and I love when your feisty spunk sneaks out. :)

But know what? My kids always ALWAYS have messy hair and faces. Heh. But I can say that because I know you will still love me. And I will be wearing skinny jeans and great eyemakeup. LOL!

You are cracking me up.

As a non-parent though, I'm really feeling like a slacker today. If you can look adorable AND wrangle children, there is no excuse from my lazy outfit today. Although I did brush my hair (and teeth!). Lol.

I should probably point out that I'm also not wearing sweats (good thing, cause I'm at work) but I have nary an accessory on.

christina said...

YES! YES! YES!
Thank you!

It's NOT that hard. I'll even go one step further...I shower AND shave my legs every day. And my kids (well, the one with teeth) get freshly brushed teeth after every meal.

Love the soap box. You said everything I was thinking.

I'm so on board with you on this one! It drives me crazy when moms say that they don't have time to look nice... it really doesn't take that much longer to just put something decent on.

Run a brush through the hair, maybe a dab of mascara and jeans and a nice fitting shirt... and done. Not that difficult. Love your outfil, BTW, Jill.

I'm back again to say a big THANKS! While shopping at the Old Navy sale over the weekend I decided to try on a pair of white khakis after reading your post. It so rare for pants to fit me 'off the rack' but these do and I *love* them! I may go back for a pair in another color, lol. I never would have tried them if it weren't for your white capris photo.

I also picked up one of the spring lightweight v-necks thanks to you!

Haha...too funny. Your outfit is totally simple to put together, yet really cute. :) I'm gonna have to get that Target tee. I'm liking the longer sleeves. Great find!

Okay, I know I'm way late to the party here, but I just found your blog and this post. I SO agree with you, and can I just say: WHAT IS WITH PEOPLE WEARING FLANNEL PAJAMA PANTS OUT IN PUBLIC? You know who you are. Come on people - I got dressed this morning - why can't you???? Seriously. Why does it take any more time/effort to put on a cute pair of bootcut dark wash jeans and a well-fitting tee, maybe a necklace and some cute flats than it does a pair of ratty sweats????

Merci!
Shannan
