my everyday style: a day at the beach in the fall!

Brutally cold winters aside, I always feel so lucky to live in Michigan for one reason.  The water.  There are lakes and ponds and rivers all around us everyday - but when we really need that refreshing feeling of being by the water that only a huge body of water can bring - we have the Great Lakes.   Whether we pop out to Grand Haven that is only a 30 minute drive or we trek up to Northern Michigan, which is a longer haul, we have water all around us.  And there is something so rejuvenating about looking out where all you can see is water for miles and remembering how big and wonderful this world is.

Northern Michigan is known for it's crystal blue water and gorgeous beaches.  This beach in Glen Arbor is a favorite of ours for all the rock searching our kids love to do.  Fall at the beach offers a way different vibe than our usual summer visits, but it's also one I enjoy.  The wind is cooler and wetter and you often have the whole place to yourself to search for rocks or splash in the water with your rain boots on.

For casual days out with the family I love to throw on a striped top, a cozy scarf and a trench coat - it's easy and comfortable and usually will take us from activities to dinner to errands or sports. Not surprisingly a trench coat is the perfect cool weather beach attire... just like it guards against the rain it's perfect for the damp beach air in the fall.  I always find that just a few classic & easy layers always seem to combine to make the best outfits.
