my outfit: blonde? no thanks.

There are probably better things one should do when they are experiencing an emotional (hormonal) roller coaster of a week, are ushering their husband out the door for a 3 day business trip (read: flying solo with the kids for three straight days) and haven't slept in a week due to kids that think sleep is optional, than make drastic changes to ones hair.

I'll be honest, if I don't get proper sleep I can't even decide between a bagel and a bowl of cereal for breakfast without tears. (I know, what am I? Like 5? Yes, maybe.) So waking up to a head of hair I don't recognize proved disastrous. Well, as "disastrous" as hair can be... I may be a bit dramatic at times.

I think I can handle a little change here and there without tears... right. Right!?!? Well, if not that, at least I can see the opportunity here. It was a chance taken, a risk wagered and a step far outside my comfort zone. So what if it didn't go according to plan. I can always say I tried. And really, what's life without a good fall flat now and then? Boring really.

My hairstylist is thankfully squeezing me (back) in this weekend. Bless her heart.

It must be mentioned, there is no offense to blondes, in fact while this hair color is "blonde" to me, many won't agree, it could have been blonde-er I suppose. I will say that I do LIKE the color... I just don't LOVE it. I'm thankful for a hairstylist who will help me do something crazy and then help me back out of it. I'm a gal that knows what she likes and goes after it, I thought about giving the hair a week or even a month. But nah, why waste time.

ps, how do you like the blazer OVER the jean jacket look? I saw this some where on the internet, I have to say I am a fan.

Details:
Blazer, JCrew
Jean Jacket, Gap
Necklace, Forever 21
T-Shirt, JCrew

Awww I love it! But totally understand how change can freak one out.. I have really dark hair right now.. & am thinking about trying to go a tad lighter.. we'll see! Anyway - love the blazer over the jean jacket, btw :)

Totally love your hair, but I can also relate to wanting to go darker. I can never make up my mind on what hair color I want to stick with! As a fellow GR girl I'm wondering where you get your hair done? Feel free to DM me if you'd rather not say online! (@JenHuiz)

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I like it, but I can see how it might be jarring to see yourself look totally different.
I wanted to comment (even though I usually just lurk) because I like the double jacket look and I've never seen it before. Thanks for bringing us something new to try!

Bummer! I really like it! I actually have the same highlights myself!! But if it doesn't feel right to you, it isn't right. Simple as that :).

Love the hair, but also excited to see what you decide to do with it ultimately!

I always have such a hard time layering jackets over jackets. It's the sleeves I think, but I always end up with sleeves that look bumpy and large. I must be doing something wrong.

I think it looks good! Maybe you could have your hair stylist just add in some brown low lights so it's still different but back to your comfort zone? Just a thought. :)

Awwww everything seems worse when you don't get any sleep! I think the lighter hair looks great on you. You've got the light eyes and can totally pull it off!

Oh man, Jill. I have made more hair mistakes than I care to mention, but I've got to say, I kind of like your hair! Eek! Oh gosh, I feel like I have so much wisdom to shell out here.
1. Do you think the blonde is the wrong color? Like, maybe it's too brassy or something? That was one of my problems. (I also thought it looked too gray for a little there because my hair was so dark and the blond was so light, it looked gray!)
2. Watch the shampoo you're using. I was using blue shampoo at one point and it totally changed my hair color!
3. Get some good conditioner because you'll want it to stay super moisturized. Keune Hair mask is a really good one.
Hope this helps! :)

I like the jean jacket/blazer look but how does it feel? Sometimes layers make me feel claustrophobic.

I'm one of those gals who goes from platinum to black, mid-back length hair to bobs without so much as a double take. But I know how emotional change can be (hair, hubby gone). Take heart--you look great, he'll be home soon, and the color can be changed.

um... i MIGHT have cried last night when my sweet husband spelled something too quickly for my over-tired brain to process. then i ended up laughing hysterically for a few minutes. let's just say lack of sleep makes me a liiiiiiiiitle nuts.

You look beautiful as usual, but I do love your dark locks. And thank heavens for the kind, patient stylists of the world. Mine still won't let me forget the "red" incident. (Which wasn't red at all, but to me, oh, I might as well have been Molly Ringwald.)

I'm almost 26 years old and I just colored my hair for the first time ever a few weeks ago. I freaked out and convinced myself that it was too drastic and that I hated it. I went to a party a couple of days later and no one even noticed! Hahahahaha! Guess it wasn't as drastic as I thought?!

Jill, I think it looks great.... but I hope you can get a look that you LOVE when you go back this weekend :)

ps. i like the dark better. the "blonde" looks great (truth) but the darker looks better.... at least on my monitor :)

I do like the color but the darker does look better on you.
I would've never thought about the jean jacket/blazer combo...it looks great.

I love the blonde! I don't think the look is that dramatic, but I understand how scary it can be when you first look in the mirror after a big change. It's a good thing your hairdresser is such a supporter of you! Secondly, I love the Blazer, Jean Jacket look, but I would worry about my ability to bend my elbows. Does all of that 'arm bulk' hold you back at all?

Jill I really really LOVE your hair, it really makes your skin tone look beautiful too. But I totally understand if you don't feel good about it. I've come away from the hairdresser one time loving my hair and have been back numerous times!!! yikes! By the way I really needed your post today, Im totally on a hormonal rollercoaster and can't seem to get off and my hubs leaves tomorrow for 4 days....let the romantic comedies and ice cream party begin! hang in there honey!

I love it, but I totally understand when the color doesn't feel right. I've been every color from platinum blonde (major mistake) to dark brown and since it's hair - not an arm or leg - every issue can be fixed fairly painlessly (although I will say going platinum was painful, it burns). I love your hair dark too! You may revisit a different version someday and it might hit the right chord. Who knows, but it's a lot of fun to play!
I totally sympathize on the lack of sleep front (and the hubby being gone - mine is gone 95% of the time - lol!). Hang in there!

you guys (gals) are the best! Thanks for all the kind words!

About the two jackets thing: it's not really too tight because I the velvet fits a bit bigger anyway. I tried it first with a different blazer and it WAS too tight, so I switched to this one!

You look wonderful both ways! I really like your new hair color but I don't think the color of the blazer compliments the color of your hair. They are way to close and it make you look just a little washed out. Have you taken pictures wearing something that contrasts your hair? I love the two jackets together!

Definetely a fan of the blazer and denim jacket look.

Whaa? Wait - this is the blonde of which you speak? I was expecting something WAY lighter. This color is gorgeous on you! Although I understand if you feel "out of your skin," know that it truly is becoming.

Don't trip girl-just dye it back! It's not even that blonde, gosh I was picturing platinum! At least you gave it a good shot and know that it's not for you. Lesson learned. I've made mistakes with my hair-a red that looked copper in college-uck! Rather unfortunate blonde streaks that looked white, also in college-gag! I'm probably about to make another mistake-bangs! But they have been on all the ladies on my inspiration boards and I want to give it a go. Maybe I will be crying with you soon! Ha!

I think your hair looks great, Jill. It's fun to try different styles and colors. I do think your dark hair is very striking on you. I think you are stunning either way. I've had my hair bleached blond, fire red and back to pretty much my natural auburn with an added little bit of red in it. We never know until we try and the good thing is that hair always grows! Good for you for tyring something new.

YellowBirdDayBook said...

I like your hair! I won't lie, I was expecting it to be platinum, so I was a little shocked.

You have to do what you are comfortable with though and I'm glad your sylist was able to get you in ASAP.

I'm not feeling the blazer/jacket combo. Does it feel bulky? I hate bulky! I'm sure it was warm though, something that is needed this time of year!

As a blonde I think you look great! And what, your life didn't change overnight with the blonde highlights?! LOL! You gotta be happy when you look in the mirror!

kristen said...

oh pretty lady, you'd look gorgeous no matter what your hair color! sorry to hear about your emotional week though! Happy Friday!

So, I REALLY love the blazer over jean jacket look. So hip.

You are gorgeous regardless...but i also prefer your hair darker. However, it should be whatever makes you happy : ) I am rather new to the 'blog' world and I have to say you are one of my top three favorites. I love that you are so down to earth and hilarious. You inspired me to start my own! Just made my first post yesterday...I have a long way to go. Thanks for the inspiration Jill.

Call me crazy, I have been following your blog for a few months but haven't commented...I like your hair!!! I know what YOU think is what matters, but I think its cute and subtle....is it highlights, I go back and forth, but may show this to my hairdresser to make it look more natural on me.

Cute...just sayin!

I think the haircolor is really cute, but it's placed oddly so I can understand why it is freaking you out. I just saw this photo of Lauren Conrad's new brunette locks and I am so close to going back to brunette just after seeing how gorgeous this looks. I like how the highlights poke through the bottom, almost in a sunkissed manner. You could totally pull this off, even in a darker hue. It would look adorable! I hope that your hair woes are remedied!
