casa good life: master bedroom!

As promised, I have more updates that have been going on here at my house, my master bedroom reveal is today!!! This project is one I started the first week in July and am still working on. It seems endless... but it's at a point where it will be staying for a while. Until I find more inspiration... but I REALLY love the way it's come together so far. It's my new favorite room in the house...

Here are the before's...

Should I go into why/how this room was so hideous? I may have mentioned before, but I was 8 months preggo when we moved into this house and I had to choose all the wall colors sight-unseen to have them completed before we moved in.

I love this yellow-ish color, but the western sun in the afternoon made the color too "warm" for my likings. Plus our entire house is more cool tones.

The IKEA dressers weren't useful or good looking. But the room did have other great features, like it's size and the windows. It was just not my 'style' at all. Overall the room was drab and uninteresting.

Now... the afters!!!

This is definitely the room that the internet built. Between finding inspiration on blogs and craigslist buys... this room could not have come together this inexpensively without the internet.

I'm no pro at decorating... but for the most part I know what I like and after that I have a very small budget. So no designer this or fancy that. I did this room on the super cheap.

My goal was to have a pulled together look that was cool and calm and comforting. I really feel like I accomplished that. (excuse the towel under the tv, we are hoping to get a wall mounted tv and I didn't want this old lug to mess up the finish on the dresser!).

Now for some of the details:

I found this chandelier on craigslist for $20... after a thorough spray of high gloss BLACK spray paint for about $3 I had a new chandy for less than $25. A fine replacement for the ugly ceiling fan. Plus, we put it on a dimmer... nice, very nice!

I love this little set-up... it's just outside my closet and is a fun place to display favorite jewelry pieces and some fashion-y books as well. I didn't properly photograph this, but it is a small two drawer campaign-style dresser.

I love symmetry. It calms me. This set up is ideal for me. The mirrors are from IKEA ($15 each), the lamps are from HomeGoods ($25 each), black & white pillow covers are from IKEA ($7 each). And I am a strictly ALL WHITE bedding gal. I just love the feeling of it. Patterned sheets/duvet makes me feel like I can't relax.

This is the larger of the two campaign-style dressers. We got this one and the two-drawer side table campaign-style pieces for $50 (for both) on craigslist and then painted them and put the hardware back on. They are gorgeous... I am IN LOVE with them. But they are pieces of crap, the drawers hardly open and they aren't too steady on their feet. For now my husband has agreed to keep them in the room because they were so cheap. I love them because they are so pretty. We were bummed that they aren't practical though.

So there it is! Other details... the curtains and rods are from IKEA ($15 and $7 respectively). The floral wall hangings were antique store finds that I spray painted a while back. The bed frame is old, from IKEA and the small leather chair is a hand-me-down from my parents. Did I cover it all?

As you can see, the budget was tight... but I think I really pulled off a great look for super cheap. On our wish list is a fancier tv, a piece of art for above the bed and a full length mirror. I'm sure we'll add them over time... but for now, it's a dreamy place to fall asleep!

It looks great! I love that you did it all on such a tight budget. The campaign dressers really are so nice, it's too bad they were so poorly made.

I too moved into our home 8 months preggo and my master is SO bland and I have needed inspiration since day one! Thank you for being that inspiration! Amazing!

Love the way the dressers turned out after you painted them-but, so sad that they are not very functional. Maybe you can eventually use them somewhere in the house where you don't need the drawer space as much. Love it!

Love the new room, but please tell me you found another spot for that awesome, huge window pane. If not, I'll be glad to find another home for it...mine! :)

I LOVE your bedroom! It's lovely. Nice touch to put mirrors behind the lamps...I'm gonna remember that one.

A good way to get some art for cheap is to enlist your kids! I bought a large canvas and primed it (with regular old latex paint) a neutral color that matched the color scheme of the room. Then I set out acrylic paint in colors that I chose...(no hot pink or sparkly purple :) Then I let my two kids paint their little hearts out. It turned out quite well...a nice piece of modern art. :)

p.s. it's fun to add another medium to the paint too...oil crayons or high quality colored pencils work great. :)

Kristen,

YES! I found a new place in the house for the large pane of glass. That was a hard decision not to put it back in the room, but with the *hopefull* new tv, there wouldn't be a spot for it. That window has lots of sentimental value... so we found a new spot for it! :)

Thanks so much everyone for your great comments!

SO SWEET of you!

p.s. i'm so happy you found a place for that huge window pane. you are a lucky girl!

i have 2 more things...i love where you keep your jewelry! never ever seen a "jewelry tree" (if that's what it is) & it just looks so organized.

and, please don't buy a new tv...i love it when people have old school tv's like us!

Looks great! Stinks that the dressers aren't so functional, darn. Gigi looks great in there too and love your jewelry display!! Job well done! A good idea for art too is to get a vintage scarf framed. I have a Hermes one I got in Paris framed and it's our main piece of art in our bedroom. I worked w/ the framing place and pinned it myself (to help w/$ -they told me how to do it). xoxo

Looks very relaxing! I have had several drawers that don't open well and I have found if you rub the drawer bottoms with wax, they open much each easier. They are such beautiful pieces! :)
