I did an informal poll on Twitter this past weekend about how you dress for the holidays...
The question was: For the holidays, with friends and family, do you dress up or go for a casual chic look for the day?
The responses I got were all "casual chic" - and I feel the same way! For hanging out with friends and family on the holidays I want to look cute, but also be ready for an impromptu nap as well! My Thanksgiving day was spent making dinner for my husband and kids and my brother joined us. It was a cozy little meal with tons of great food and my crazy kids being crazy. Here's a bit what my outfit looked like:
I wanted to be comfortable in the kitchen (and on the couch later!) but still cute and put together. I am absolutely obsessed with leggings lately! I need to pick up some other colors, but for now, black works with just about anything! Here I paired them with a flowy yellow/gold top and red accessories for a fun fall look. Then gold accessories brought the look together.
How do you like to dress for the holidays?

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Robyn!
Today's EXPRESS consult is for Robyn... she came back for some fall and winter looks after I put together some summer looks for her a couple months back (you can check that out or learn more about Robyn here if you like!)
Since Robyn lives in Texas, layers are key this time of year... but bundling up isn't as necessary as here in the midwest. I chose outfits that contained simple layers, a sophisticated and toned down palette for fall/winter and versatile yet chic pairings!
A light-weight sweater and cropped cords are fun fall look for a busy mom on the go! This outfit is perfect for running errands with the kids or even for a day at work. Add in some nice shoes and simple bangle bracelets and the outfit comes together!
I adore this outfit and could wear a similar one every day I think! Here I've just paired a classic, but updated cardigan with wide-legged jeans. It is comfy, but very pulled together. I loaded up on warm gold-toned accessories which are very hot for this season and go with anything to make the whole outfit effortless!
Robyn loves dresses and she wanted to try out the slouchy boot look. So why not try a new trend with a staple in your wardrobe that you already feel comfortable with? It works great! For added warmth and style I added a tailored jacket.
Enjoy and Happy Shopping Robyn!

Reader Question!
On Twitter, the following question was posed:
This is a really great question, because haven't we all spent hundreds on bridesmaid dresses only to have them later hauled off to Goodwill or Salvation Army because they haven't a use past that day? Sure you could always have them tailored, hemmed or dyed to be more usable, but then don't you just have an even more expensive dress?
I claim no expertise on wedding details and I know there are a million bloggers out there that can blog a wedding like no other. But here I think I'll speak only to versatile dresses that would make a blushing bride and her attendants equally happy. Weddings these days are so different than they were even when I got married. (and that was only 7 years ago!) With the constant modernization of weddings and the less fill-in-the-blanks type planning going on these days (i.e. it's no longer plug and play a dress, a reception hall and a cake) there is so much more freedom and expression in weddings.
For a versatile bridesmaid dress I would definitely go with a cocktail-style dress that is about knee length - not too short, but something that someone could pull out and wear to a holiday party, etc.
This dress from Ann Taylor Loft would be gorgeous for a bridesmaid dress. Add a belt to tie in the season or wedding colors and you are all set!

JCrew always can be counted on for classic silhouette's and great quality. If you can find a style on sale that fits all your bridesmaids, even better. I love this sophisticated neckline and a great peachy-pink that would work with all skin tones.

If black and white fit in your weddings color scheme, then White House|Black Market is a go-to spot for amazing dresses in conservative yet stylish cuts. I am love, love, loving this simple satin strapless option.

So there you have it Jennifer! Happy Bridesmaid dress shopping or wearing!

shopping guide: [fashion forward gal}
For the fashion inclined women in your life... or a convenient list to "happen" to leave on your husbands night stand...

(1)
This is a gorgeous handmade belt that any gal will swoon for! They are available in several colors and Heart of Light also makes the same floral designs for pins, hair clips and more!
(Etsy, Heart of Light, $35)
(2)
Prettily wrapped for a babysitter or your stylin' sister, no one will guess this beauty came from Old Navy... or that you scored it for a fab price! (Old Navy, $12.50)
(3)
Jess L.C. knows just how much trend to mix with classic for staple jewelry items that are a must have for your wardrobe! I absolutely love these earrings and they are available in gold or silver! (Jess L.C., $23, silver; $26, gold)
(4)
I just adore these chunky knitted cowls. They are perfect for throwing over a blazer or for bundling up with on the coldest days! If I could get my knitting needles in gear I could knit myself a couple of these for gifts... in the meantime, let Yarn Over Movement do all the work for you! (Etsy, YarnOverMovement, $40)
(5)
I am loving the all natural materials of this clutch paired with a big carved wooden closure. (Coquese, $62)
*note, Coquese is offering free shipping - for a limited time - and a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to their online boutique!
Fashion Formula: Edgy Preppy!
JCrew exudes a new trend in dressing that I call "edgy preppy" - all the preppy aspects of styling are there (think: cardigans, layers, blazers, poplin) but with a wrench thrown in to the outfit in the form of something completely unexpected (think: sequins, tough jewelry, distressed denim).

(photos above via JCrew)
Here I'll try and tackle the edgy preppy from one angle, however, the options are limitless and the more layers and unexpected details you can add, the better. With edgy preppy more = more.

I am a working mom and my husband and I have a beautiful 22 month old son. I work full time for a community college. I'd say my work environment is business, but I rarely wear suits. I consider my style classic and my absolute modern fashion icon is Reese Witherspoon. I need work appropriate, fashionable, classic outfits but also something I can wear on outings with the family - running errands, heading to the Christmas tree farm to pick out our tree and running about with an active almost two year old. I love fashion, but wouldn't say I'm trendy. I also recently found out we have a new baby on the way next summer so transitional outfits maintaining style will be important. I strongly believe that just because I'm a mom doesn't mean I can't have style!

shopping guide: {beauty & bath}

(1)
What a fun gift for a hostess, or even for your own home during the holiday season! (Etsy, Sherri's Scents & Soys, $5.50)
(2)
Oprah featured this several years ago and it never has gotten old for me. It's such a luxurious gift for yourself or a sister, aunt or mother-in-law. Any woman finding this under the tree on Christmas morning will be delighted! (Origins, $27.50)
(3)
I picked up one of these in Vegas (more on my binge at LUSH coming soon!) and I was so delightfully pleased! If you like bubble baths or know someone who does, this gift is for them! Each little "pod" is worth 3 or 4 of the most luxurious bubble baths you could imagine. The best part... they are made with real lavender oil, real bits of dried lavender and are NOT tested on little critters. Run, don't walk, to scoop up some of these goodies! (LUSH, $8.75)
(4)
I first ran across these (and this etsy seller) from my girl Jackie @ SPPN. Since then they have been sitting in my etsy favs waiting for the perfect person to buy them for. They would be so perfect for a little purse cosmetic kit or to organize baby's do-dads in a diaper bag. (Etsy, MPsen's, $19.95 - but TWO get ONE free!)
(5)
It's a clutch, but it's also has a waterproof lining. I vote on this as a cosmetic bag filled with goodies for your favorite girl friend, the gal in the office gift exchange or your babysitter. I love the sunny disposition of the fabric by Robert Le Heros (there are more fabric choices as well! (Coquese, $45.00)
Reader Question!
I recently found this email in my inbox...

This is such a great question, because 3/4 length sleeved coats and outerwear are popping up in stores this season, but for those of us that live in frigid temps, like Stacy, and myself, we need something to keep our little forearms warm. And what a fun fashion statement to cover those arms in a cheap and chic way!
Here are some of the options I suggested to Stacy, all very chic and within her budget!

Have a burning question for me? Email me at goodlifeforless @ gmail.com! I will try my VERY hardest to respond to them all!
Thanks Stacy!
Hi Jill! First I must say I love your blog and have been a faithful reader since discovering you a few months ago. As a mom on the go, I love the way you incorporate easy, budget friendly style into everyday life.
So, I just got a great deal on this Old Navy coat (in black) [see below]... when I put it on, it just feels way more expensive and glamorous than the price tag lets on. But, in order to make the 3/4 length sleeves work when it gets colder, I need some elbow length gloves. I found a pair of black leather at TJ's but they were still $50. Just a little too much right now. Any thoughts or suggestions where I might find a great pair (don't need to be leather, by the way) for about half that price?
Thanks so much!!!
Stacy

nothing like a good cowboy...
This can be filed under Las Vegas trip notes... however, the photos and experiences weren't mine. :(
"PBR" was in Las Vegas while we were. Oh, wait, you don't know what PBR is? Common'! Well, the truth is I didn't until I learned about it last year when we were in Vegas at the same time of year. It's not "Pabst Blue Ribbon" which is what folks in my parts would guess (good down home midwest beer). It's actually the Professional Bull Riders. Cowboys, people. They were peppered all over Vegas while we were there.
And, of course, no one could capture the event as well as The Sartorialist and his gal, Garance, no?

Makes this city mouse want to buy a pair of Wranglers and let my hair blow in the dusty breeze. Because, really, there is nothing like a good cowboy, right?
(ps, wouldn't it have been wild to run into these two fab bloggers!?!?!)
(pps. probably the closest I will ever be to Tim and Garance and their cameras. In my life. I think I can live with that though.)

good LOOK for less: EXPRESS, Lisa!
Today's GLFL EXPRESS is Lisa... she's a busy working mom looking to kick her wardrobe up a notch. Here's a bit of her email to me:
Sounds good Lisa; wash-n-wear, cozy warm for the winter, vintage flair with some fun & funky mixed in! You got it!
A little dress like this is perfect for layering with tights, skinny jeans, leggings or wearing it on it's own. All of those possibilities work great with the knee-high boots and a cardigan for extra warmth and fun! Black and white stripes are all the rage these days and have a great sixties throw back flair to them. Paired with some fun earring and fun beaded bracelet and you are all set!
I saw this funnel neck sweater IRL at F21 recently and fell in love. It has a fun old meets new vibe to it and is comfy and cozy without sacrificing style and personality. Pair it with a slinky tank (or any top really!) and some vintage-y accessories and this is a great look for work or play!
The longer cut of these tops (the cardigan and the t-shirt) are very "mom" friendly while still be stylish. They are great transition pieces for past or upcoming pregnancies and are great looking too! Add some fun boots and a plaid scarf and the look is fun and fresh and definitely ready for the cooler months.

I am a young (28) mom with a husband and a 8 month old, and I work outside the home part time as a chemical engineer. My job is very casual, and since I work in a lab, I have to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. I really need to turn the style up a notch! I want to look casual, fun and pulled-together. I love pieces with a vintage flare, and I think if I had time and money, my style would be an eclectic mix of fun, & funky pieces worn with causal basics. Since my kiddo is a dirty-laundry creating machine, it would be great if you could find pieces that are wash-n-wear.

shopping guide: {family cold weather wear}
This time of year you and your family can never have enough cold weather wear! That is at least, here in the 'great North'! But I have found because of this that they also make for great gifts for the whole family. It never fails that mid-season a glove goes missing, your child's hat disappears in the snow fort not to be found until spring or you thought you could brave without a hat... but you can't. And as far as gifts go, the price point can't be beat! And just think of how warm your loved one will feel... all because of you! So practically, cold weather wear is about as value-based as it gets!

TOMS!
Here is the post where I proclaim my love for TOMS, once again! But let's seriously get serious for a minute: If there is one thing that would warm my heart this holiday is that my readers would think critically about the gifts they buy and make them count. What do I mean by this? Well, Christmas is such a "plastic" holiday, and I am not just talking about your credit card. A few Barbies under the tree may not harm too much. But this year, I am personally going to do more to make less plastic and junk under our tree. Especially as a mom to young kids.
Enter TOMS. Wouldn't it be great to have your kids open a new pair of adorable shoes on Christmas morning... knowing that some shoe-less child across the world will do the same because of you?
I am contemplating these styles for my kiddos this year:
Herringbone Sparkle Mary Jane Tiny TOMS, $34

Olive/Grey Camo Tiny TOMS, $34

And you never know... Santa may have a pair of these glorious glittered TOMS waiting for me under the tree... a gal can dream, right!?!?
